Roots and Wings taking part in national campaign to combat hunger

NORWICH – Roots and Wings will participate in philanthropist Alan S. Feinstein’s 14th annual $1 Million Dollar Giveaway to Fight Hunger, also known as the Feinstein Challenge.
Every year for the past 13 years, Feinstein has doled out $1 million of his own money to anti-hunger agencies and food banks such as Roots and Wings all across America, raising over $1.25 billion for more than 3,000 organizations nationwide to date.
The format is simple, according to the Rhode Island-based Feinstein Foundation – the more donations or pledges an organization, agency or program is able to raise between March 1 and April 30 for the challenge, the more of Feinstein’s $1 million it will receive.
Food donations will also figure toward the total amount ultimately raised by Roots and Wings, a program of Catholic Charities of Chenango, over the next three weeks, valued at $1 per item or per pound. Participating agencies must raise a minimum of $250 to be eligible, however, with the $1 million divided proportionately in early August, based on how much they raise.
“We are joining a little late but we’re going to give it a shot,” stated Roots and Wings Program Director Melinda Mandeville, who learned of the challenge while attending a quarterly Food Bank of Central New York meeting. “Because we are struggling a little bit right now, something – anything – is better than nothing.”
Mandeville said the local food bank had considered waiting for 2012 to participate in the nationwide challenge, held every spring, but a general lack of funding forced the program to rethink that strategy.
“We’re still waiting to see FEMA funding come through, along with other funds we usually see in the summer, and we’ll probably be depending a lot on donations and fundraisers, so this is pretty important at this point,” said Mandeville of the program’s participation in the national challenge. “The more donations made to Roots and Wings from now to April 30, the more money we will receive from the Feinstein Challenge.”
Founder of the International Famine Center at Tufts University and the Feinstein Center for a Hunger-Free America at the University of Rhode Island, Feinstein is nationally recognized for his philanthropic and humanitarian efforts. According to the Feinstein Foundation, the challenge has become one of the most successful grass roots campaigns to fight hunger in the nation.
