Fast start lifts Norwich to first win

Norwich 4, Owego 2
NORWICH – Monday, Norwich scored all four of its runs in the opening inning to bounce back from an opening-game loss last weekend.
The Tornado needed to weather an Owego rally in the sixth inning to hold on to the lead. With one Owego run already in, reliever Justin Lindenthaler came in with the bases loaded and just one out. Lindenthaler had a strikeout and induced a pop out to end the inning. The junior lefty followed that up with a scoreless seventh to earn the save and preserve the win for junior starter Ben Barnes.
Barnes had 10 strikeouts and allowed one earned run over five innings. NHS senior Nick McCullough finished 3-for-3 with a run, Colby Griffin had two hits and one RBI, and Grady Thompson was also 2-for-3 with an RBI. “Lindenthaler did a great job coming in and getting us out of a jam,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “It was a good win for us.”
Norwich plays at Susquehanna Valley Wednesday.

WEST WINFIELD – Sherburne-Earlville evened its record on the season getting six strong innings from winning pitcher Jobie Gage.
Anthony Palmer’s RBI single in the fourth inning scored Gage with the go-ahead run to break a 2-2 tie. S-E added three insurance runs in the seventh. Jake Bohnert and Mike Wilson were credited with single ribbies. Gage finished with seven strikeouts and allowed four hits.
“The kids played well. We’re not hitting, but we’re putting the ball in play,” said S-E coach Brian Hicks. “We’re not allowing any big innings and our defense is playing tough.”

Edmeston extended its lead with two runs in the fifth. Zak Ruffles doubled and came in on a Blake Pavelka two-bagger. Clayton Hawes scored Pavelka with a single.
“We had a few errors in the outfield that led to some extra bases for them, and that put us at a disadvantage,” said G-MU coach Rick Mohrein. “Ruffles did a nice job (pitching) for them. “When they needed an out, he came through.”
Jon Scofield had an RBI double in the third for G-MU, who play at Laurens Wednesday.

WEST WINFIELD – Sherburne-Earlville’s rally was cut short by a thunderstorm in Monday’s contest at Mount Markham.
The Marauders nearly came back from a 6-0 deficit scoring once in the fourth and three more times in the fifth. The go-ahead runs were scored in the sixth, but play was halted due to weather. “We were really coming on and the kids were feeling it,” said S-E coach Michelle Parker. “Because of the thunderstorm, the final score went back to the last completed inning.”
S-E’s batters drew 12 walks in the contest, but left nine runners on base including the bases loaded in the third. “We started to become more patient at the plate and we were more alert with our baserunning,” Parker said. “Even though we lost, I was pleased we ended on a high note.”
Desiree Dinnigo had two hits and two RBI for Mount Markham.
