Colgate Chamber players peform in Norwich Sunday
NORWICH – The Chenango County Council of the Arts announces the final performance in their 2011 Chamber Music Series, The Colgate Chamber Players on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Colgate Chamber Players, now in their 23rd season, are a select group of advanced players representing many disciplines across the Colgate University campus. Their director is Laura Klugherz and they will be joined by guest artist Ulla Baur.
Lauded by the NY Times as “dramatic ... emotional ... evocative,” and promoted by ABC of Madrid as a “magnificent violinist and violist who is a dedicated promoter of Spanish music,” Laura Klugherz made her Carnegie Hall debut to rave reviews in 1989. She studied in the U.S. and in Europe as a Fulbright scholar where she subsequently performed during many years as Concertmaster/Soloist of the Munich Chamber Orchestra and the Munich Bach Orchestra. A recipient of numerous awards and prizes (Fulbright Post-doctoral research Award, Spanish Ministry of Culture Post-doctoral Award, Juenge Kuenstler of Bavaria, San Jose Symphony Young Artist Award, Juan Morales Prize of Spain), she performs as a violin/viola recitalist throughout Europe, Latin America, and the United States. As a chamber musician, she performed as violinist of the Trio Ciudad de Sevilla, the Morrison String Quartet, and she has collaborated with many of the finest chamber music ensembles, including members of the Beaux Arts Trio, the Raphael Trio, the Cuarteto Latinomericano, and the Lydian Quartet. Ms. Klugherz has been on the faculty of the Raphael Trio Summer Chamber Music Seminar at Adamant, viola professor for the National Youth Orchestra of Spain, and is currently violin/viola professor at the Lake Placid Institute.
Ulla Baur studied the violin under Irmgard Gahl at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, then the baroque violin at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague under Sigiswald Kuijken, concluding her studies with a diploma. Following this, she was a member of numerous baroque orchestras. In subsequent years her busy career as a soloist and concert master took her all across Europe. She has participated in a large number of CD, radio and TV recordings both in Germany and abroad.
Since 2000, she has taken a special interest in the orchestra “La Ciaccona” which she founded. Through her scholarly work, Ulla Baur came upon the forgotten opera Demofoonte by Joseph Schuster, for which she was able to secure the partnership of Bayerischer Rundfunk (a unit of German Public Radio) and Deutschlandradio. The production was published by Deutsche Harmonia Mundi (BMG). It was followed by the staged performance of Amor e Psiche by Joseph Schuster at the Festival in Dresden and the Early Music Festival in Regensburg. Ulla Baur has since rediscovered additional operas and oratorios by Schuster as well as all of his harpsichord concerts, editing them in modern scores.
This performance is presented with support from Mead Westvaco and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.
Tickets are $15 general admission with discounts for seniors and members of the CCCA. Youth 18 and under will be admitted for free.
The concert will be presented in the Martin W. Kappel Theater of the CCCA, 27 West Main Street, Norwich. For tickets or additional information contact the Council at 336-ARTS (2787) or www.chenangoarts.org.
