DVD Patrol
It’s hard to believe that the DVD Patrol is on its way to a sixth year. We’ve featured hundreds of movies with many actors and actresses that have always stood out due to the quality of their work. One person that fits that description is Angelina Jolie. She has come a long way from portraying a model who made it on the scene and then tragically lost her life in “Gia.” Jolie also works as an ambassador traveling the world to make it a better place as well as being a wife and mother. You wonder how she does it all? The Toddster has put together a list of his favorite Jolie films in no particular order. Here you are.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - One of the great video game movies of our time. Jolie plays Lara Croft. Lara is a bit of a tomboy that could make Indiana Jones cry, but she’s very good at her job and makes globe trotting look easy. Her latest find is a very old clock left to her by a series of clues left to her by her late father (Jon Voight). It seems her father was trying to put together an ancient relic that could control time. She has to be careful because an ancient order called the Illuminati is also looking for the pieces and if she isn’t careful, her time might be up as well. Can she win the race that her father lost? Jolie also returned for another sequel in “Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life.”
Gone in Sixty Seconds - No one said that being a car thief was easy. Just ask Memphis Raines (Nicholas Cage). Memphis left the business to pursue an easier way of life but his brother Kip (Giovanni Ribisi) has tried to become a better thief. After a job goes wrong, Memphis has to step in finish a job or it will mean his brother’s life. He assembles his old gang including Sway (Jolie), Sphinx (Vinnie Jones), and Otto (Robert Duvall). Memphis has 72 hours to put a bucket list of a whos who of 50 cars or or not just Kip will be in danger but his crew too. Will they be able to put together this one last job? A couple of other movies that the Toddster can suggest along these lines with Jolie are “Hackers” and “Wanted.”
Mr and Mrs. Smith - The things people learn when they get married. John Smith (Brad Pitt) was working when he met an amazing woman named Jane (Jolie). There is that little thing called love at first sight and that seems to be what is working here. They have one of those fast courtships and suddenly they’re married. Years later, the love is still there but in a way you get used to each other and things change. Things are about to change a lot when they learn what each other’s jobs really are. It seems the two of them are really government assassins and now they have been contracted to take down the one person they weren’t expecting- each other. Will they find a way to make the marriage work without killing one another? A couple of other movies with Jolie working the world of espionage are “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” and “Original Sin.”
Salt - Evelyn Salt (Jolie) was one of the toughest operatives that the CIA had to offer. Operatives sometimes get caught and she was caught by Chinese Intelligence until she was traded back to the U.S. A couple of years later, she has been working very hard and she goes to celebrate her anniversary until a man claiming he wants to defect has information about a Russian Spy. He has quite a story to tell until the person he says is a Spy is Evelyn herself. Now the only way she can prove that she is innocent is to find her husband and find the real spy. Things don’t quite go the way she plans. Is there something she doesn’t know or is there something she doesn’t want the CIA to know? Some other movies with Jolie showing her dramatic skills are “The Bone Collector” (With Denzel Washington), “Changeling,” and “The Good Sheperd” (with Matt Damon), and “Taking Lives” (with Ethan Hawke).
Girl, Interupted - This is the one that got her the Academy Award. (This one was also suggested by a special patroller named Tina. Thanks for the tip!) Susanna (Winona Ryder) was a young girl getting ready to break out into the World on her own but was having some very serious doubts about this so her parents sent her to a psychiatrist for help. Unfortunately, Susanna is sent into a mental health hospital for more help which might not be the best thing. Help can sometimes come from the most unlikely place. Meet Lisa (Jolie). Lisa might seem a bit off her game but she manages to see something in Susanna that makes her become more reassured of herself. What is that exactly and can Susanna return the favor for Lisa? Jolie has a resume with more movies with “Beyond Borders,” “Alexander” (with Colin Farrell), and “Pushing Tin” (starring John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton).
Over the years. we’ve featured these special columns with actors that stick out. I’ve always liked what Jolie brings the table in her different roles. Some good ones on the way for next time including a certain wizard and a movie for a great actress who we get to see as a singer. The Toddster will see you next week.
