YMCA to host 19th annual Healthy Kids Day

NORWICH – Part educational, part recreational and always a fun-filled experience for families and children of all ages, the 19th annual YMCA Healthy Kids Day will kick-off at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Norwich Family YMCA, 68-70 North Broad St.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., kids will have a chance to “take over the whole Y,” according to YMCA Youth and Family Director Bonnie Tiffany. This year’s event will feature a giant-sized inflatable maze and bounce house, the Ross Park Zoomobile and – for the first time – the Colgate University Juggling Club. Additional activities – such as relay races, live ukulele and guitar, a clown and Double Dutch jump-rope lessons – will be held throughout the facility, including all three gymnasiums, the kids’ gym, pool and community room.
While the event is always full of fun and excitement, Tiffany said it’s really about promoting healthy lifestyle choices and activities for children of all ages.
“The Healthy Kids Day initiative has always been very popular and the kids absolutely love all there is to do,” stated Tiffany. “We typically see around 600 people show up every year and there will be a lot going on, as always. There’s just so many activities for the kids to enjoy.”
As in the past, the first 50 kids through the door will get a balloon and a Healthy Kids Day gift bag, reported Tiffany, and door prizes will be raffled off throughout the day.
In addition, the Chenango County Sheriff’s Department will issue individual child ID cards to those interested, added Tiffany, an opportunity that’s become extremely popular with parents.
A number of health organizations will be handing out information on healthy childhood living and giving away some free prizes, she added, and various companies have donated samples of yogurt, granola and other healthy snack options.
“Everyone involved has such a great time every year – the parents, the staff and especially the kids,” said Tiffany. “It’s just a perfect way to educate families while having some fun and making parents more aware of the importance of incorporating physical fitness into their child’s everyday routine.”
There is no cost of admission for the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day. For more information call 336-9622 or visit www.norwichymca.com.
