Norwich finishes perfect week with weekend sweep

Norwich 5, Susquehanna Valley 3
CONKLIN – Norwich produced a season-high 13 hits, and scored two runs in the top of the seventh to break a tie game and win for the second time this season.
Ben Barnes’ sharp grounder to shortstop took a bad hop and bounced into the outfield scoring Brendan McInerney with the go-ahead run. Josh Whaley delivered his second RBI single of the game scoring Mackay Hotaling.
Justin Lindenthaler, who recorded a save in Norwich’s win earlier in the week, came on in relief in the fourth inning to earn his first varsity win. Lindenthaler induced a line-out-and-throw-back-to-first double play to end the game.
“It’s nice that our bats are starting to warm up,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “We’re playing good defense and getting a lot out of our bullpen. This was a nice league win.”
Norwich opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the third. McInerney’s RBI triple scored Nick McCullough with the first run. Colby Griffin and Whaley added RBI singles later in the frame.
Martinson said that eight of Norwich’s nine starters had base hits. McInerney led with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, and Whaley went 2-for-4 with the aforementioned RBIs.
SV tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. After loading the bases, John Columbus delivered a timely two-run single.

Norwich 6, Greene 5
NORWICH – Norwich completed a 3-0 week rallying in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Greene Saturday afternoon in a non-league matchup.
The Trojans took the lead for the first time scoring two runs in the seventh. An infield error with the bases loaded allowed two runs to score.
Norwich mounted its comeback beginning with a Justin Lindenthaler double. Brendan McInerney reached on a fielder’s choice and advance to second on a stolen base. Sophomore Colby Griffin plated two runs to tie the game with a single. After a Ben Barnes single, Thomas Kalicicki drove in Griffin with the game-winner.
“Greene is a good ball club that played sound defense against us,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “We showed a lot of resiliency coming back. We fought hard the whole game, and I was proud of the way we played over spring break.”
Kalicicki went 3-for-4 on the day, while Griffin and Mackay Hotaling had two hits apiece.
Norwich (3-1) hosts Sidney today and plays at Chenango Valley Tuesday.

Westmoreland 14, Sherburne-Earlville 4
SHERBURNE – Westmoreland scored all of its runs over the first four innings to hand S-E a home loss on Friday.
Mike Wilson went 3-for-4 with one RBI to lead S-E, and Matt Piazzi added a two-run single. The Marauders’ record is now 2-2 overall.

Delhi 14, Unadilla Valley 8
NEW BERLIN – Jacob Sackett led the Bulldogs to a comeback win over Unadilla Valley Friday finishing 3-for-4 with a four RBI.
Sackett’s RBI double highlighted Delhi’s three-run sixth inning to giving the visitors the lead for good. Sean Kline added four hits for Delhi and four runs scored.
Brett Smith, Zach Montgomery, and Travis Conklin all had two hits apiece for UV (2-1).

Greene 1, Susquehanna Valley 0
CONKLIN – Greene, back-to-back Section IV runners-up the past two seasons, stepped up in competition Friday afternoon knocked off traditional STAC power Susquehanna Valley.
Rebecca Hanrahan pitched a three-hit shutout for the the Trojans (2-0) striking out three. Hanrahan also collected the game’s lone RBI driving in Taylor Ellis with a single in the fifth inning. Ellis reached third after tripling with two outs, the game’s only extra-base hit. “Once again our defense was strong,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “With Becca only striking out three, we had to make plays in the field, and we did.
Greene plays Afton Tuesday.

Westmoreland 15, Sherburne-Earlville 2
SHERBURNE – Westmoreland pulled away from a 1-1 tie after four innings scoring three in the fifth and adding eight in the sixth in Friday’s contest.
Jenn Munn had three hits and four RBI for Westmoreland, and Gabbie Murphy added a pair of ribbies on three hits. Murphy had four strikeouts to earn the win.

Track and Field

B-G/Afton Invitational
BAINBRIDGE – At the non-scoring B-G/Afton Invitational Saturday, Greene senior Chad Noelle set two more meet records easing to first-place finishes in the 800- and 1,600-meter races.
Noelle, the defending New York State Division II champion in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, won the 1,600 timing 4:27.42, while adding his other record in the 800 crossing the finish line in 2:00.73.
Norwich senior Morgan Crawford and the Bears’ Adam Davis were the only other local boys to have two individual firsts. Crawford won the 100 meters in 11.83 in breezy conditions, and also was at the top of podium in the 200 meters after winning in 24.39.
Davis, meanwhile, led the way in a pair of field events. He cleared 5-foot-6-inches to win the high jump, and sailed over 10-feet-6-inches to notch a win in the pole vault.
Other local winners were Norwich freshman Matt Murray in the 400-meter dash (52.91) and Greene junior Isaiah Webb in the discus (110-feet-8-inches).
On the girls’ side, G-MU/Morris thrower Cassie Schwarzhans swept the discus 103-feet-8 1/2-inches) and shot put (32-feet-5-inches), the only area girl to walk away with two individual wins. B-G/Afton eighth-grader, Julia Knapp, won the 200 meters in 27.65, while Knapp’s teammate Katrina Ross nailed down a first in the 400-meter hurdles (1:18.41).
