Tuesday night storm causes heavy damage at G-MU

GILBERTSVILLE – Severe winds did heavy damage to the grounds of the Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton Central School Tuesday night in what’s thought to be a tornado touchdown.

Superintendent Glenn Hamilton said the school’s new sports field was struck by powerful winds, twisting metal bleachers and railings and destroying a wooden press box, scattering debris across the field. The track surrounding the field also suffered damage from debris, he said.

No injuries were reported.

The G-MU sports facility, completed just last year, sits several hundred feet atop a high hill above the main campus, looking across the surrounding valley.

“We’re not sure if it was a tornado, but it caused significant damage – amazing damage,” said Hamilton.
