The Kennedys perform at Six on the Square
OXFORD – On Saturday at 7:30 p.m., 6 On The Square (6OTS) is proud to present American folk-rock legends, The Kennedys. One of the most compelling acts on the contemporary folk scene today, they have performed all over the U.S., even for President Clinton’s first, and second inaugurations. They have ten CDs under their belts and are still attracting enthusiastic audiences in their second decade of working together. This is your opportunity to see The Kennedys live and up-close in an intimate café.
The Kennedys are Maura and Pete, a much-traveled married duo who really do make beautiful music together. The story of their personal and professional relationship seems to be magical. The two East Coast-born musicians met by chance in Austin, Texas. After a first date at Buddy Holly’s grave, they sparked a songwriting collaboration that resulted in an enduring romance and a creative partnership that radiates warmth, positive energy, and captivating music.
Maura grew up in Syracuse, New York. Her lead vocals lilt and soar to express their poetic lyrics. But don’t be mistaken, Maura’s flawless soprano voice has an emotional range that can give a full-bodied punch when needed. Maura also plays the acoustic rhythm guitar, harmonica, glockenspiel, and the uke. Her sweet harmonies blend beautifully with those of her partner Pete.
Pete is from the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington DC. A multi-instrumentalist, Pete plays the acoustic guitar, electric sitar, and ukulele. He’s also been known to add mandolin, keyboards, bass and drums as needed.
In addition to their live performances (about 1500 gigs), recording sessions, and conducting monthly guitar workshops, the hard working Kennedys have a regular weekly slot showcasing their favorite eclectic folk-rock on their “Dharma Café” show on SIRIUS satellite radio.
Their goal is to live in the moment, appreciating every second of sensation, which imbues their music with a constant sense of wonder and freshness. Come and be awed! The show begins at 7:30 p.m.. Tickets are $12 until the day of the show; $15 the day of the show. Ticket price for students is always $2; please call to make a Student reservation!
Upcoming musical performances: Garnet Rogers May 14; North Sea Gas on May 21; and Jeff and Vida on June 11. All three shows are at 7:30, with doors opening at 6:30. Visit the website at www.6onthesquare.org for tickets and future event information.
