Schools of the Past: Greene's Joint Districts

It is time to turn to the many joint districts which were part of Greene and other townships. The information pertaining to these districts is scant; however we will touch on the historical information relevant to all that has been researched.
The first joint district was joint #1 between Greene and Smithville and was in existence from 1835-1844 which was taken from district #7 which was originally Greene/Smithville. The second joint district was joint #2 again Greene/Smithville and was only in existence from 1830 to 1836 when it was changed to District #1. No information is found relevant to Joint District #11, again Greene/Smithville only that its life span was 1839-1877. We will now relate onlyJ.D. # and the number of years in existence.
Number #25 Greene/Smithville in existence from 1856-1901 when it was dissolved and added to Greene District #13 and the property was divided between the two towns, and this building no longer exists. The only research found relevant to this district was a low of 19 scholars and a high of 25 and in 1901 dissolved and that the schoolhouse was in the Town of Greene near the Town line.
J.D. #2 which was Greene/Oxford from 1830 to 1838 when it became all #2 in Greene and this is the schoolhouse that is located in Brisben.
J.D. #22 - Again Greene/Oxford when it became #16 and the property was divided. The lifespan of this joint district was 1838-1853 and with all the changes relevant to #22 we need not be repetitive again.
The J.D. #9 which was Green e/Coventry only existed from 1822 to 1844, again J.D. # 8 Greene/Coventry only in existence from 1832-1843. J.D. #2 - Greene/Barker (Broome Co.), another short life span 1838-1841 when one of these joint districts became No. 1 from 1845 to 1880. Nothing is known regarding J.D. #13 only the years 1830-1844 and the same with J.D. #23 from 1833-1979. This district as noted had a longer life span.
J.D. #11 again Greene/Barker from 1831 to 1844, J.D. #7 Greene/Chenango from 1830-1851, J.D. #28 Greene/Chenango from 1838-1841, J.D. #17 Greene/Chenango only one year 1830-1831. Joint District #11 Greene/Triangle had a long life from 1830 to 1945 and finally Joint District #21 Greene/Colesville in existence from 1830 to 1881.
The district line changes that Mrs. Folsom found are scant, but as a tribute they are printed here. 1832 - New District #1 former from J.D. #7 (Greene/Smithville). 1834 - that part of District #2 in Greene/Oxford which lies south of lands occupied by Eli Haynes from District #2 to District #3 - Greene. 1835 - That part of J.D. #9 (Greene/Coventry) lying south of Great Lots #77, #78 to Coventry from #9 to #15 (Coventry.) 1839 - #9 (Greene/Coventry) restored to its original boundaries made in 1822. Again in 1839 a new Greene #1 was formed from parts of J.D. #9 (Green/Coventry and #13 (lots 29, 30, 31/TM).
Proceeding to 1841 District #23 was dissolved and the farm of David P. Walker went to District #11 (Greene/Barker/Chenango) and all the rest went to Joint District #7 (Greene/Barker). In 1846 the farm occupied by David Roby went from District #4 to District #8 (Coventry/Greene.)
In 1850 that was a transfer from District #8 (Greene/Coventry) and given to District #18, in 1851District #42 (Town of Chenango) was dissolved with three parts of #11 (Greene/Chenango/Barker), #7 in Greene/Chenango and #21 in Chenango as they were in 1847.
We will repeat Joint District #22 (Greene/Oxford) again as follows: to include farms of Seth Hollenbeck, Robert Fenton, Samuel 1. Gray and Amos Gray on the west, north by lands of Amos Gray, Samuel Wheeler, Hiram Leach, Richard TenBroeck, William Olds, Wheaton Race, Abram Tillotson, Daniel Loomis and Dan T. Loomis, east by Dan T. Loomis, Steven Puffer to the river, down river to Hiram Bartoo, southwest to Erastus Tremain, Samuel Walker and R. Tremain.
1852 - J.D. #22 was dissolved and the schoolhouse and library were divided between the two towns Oxford/Greene.
To continue with this puzzle, in 1877 a new district #24 was formed from #9 (Coventry) and #24 (Greene.) 1901 would see District #25 dissolved and the property to sold at auction and the proceeds of same divided between District #8 (Smithville) and District #13 (Greene.)
After reading this puzzle if you are completely baffled by all the tic/tat/toe that was played in the many changes of district lines between these towns, speak with anyone connected with the Greene Historical Society and they will relate the same and that is it is almost completely baffling to all who read and study.
Thus another chapter of Greene District School is written, again with the plea, do not destroy any school information you might have, pass it to someone who will retain it for future generations.
