Heggie fans 17 in Oxford victory

Oxford 4, Unadilla Valley 2
OXFORD – Oxford junior Jacquelyn Heggie struck out a career-high 17 batters leading Oxford past Unadilla Valley Tuesday.
Julianne Heggie finished 3-for-3 scoring two runs, and sister Jacquelyn drove in a pair of runs. Megan Golden added an RBI single.
“Jacquelyn was moving the ball around today and really hitting her spots,” said Oxford coach Heather Pizza summing up her starting pitcher’s performance.
UV scored its two runs in the fourth. After two runners reached on errors, Carly Beadle followed with a two-run RBI double.
The Blackhawks (7-3) host Greene today.

GREENE – Coming off its first loss of the season last weekend, Greene swept a pair of games from Delhi and Hancock Tuesday by a combined 33-1 score.
In the opener, the Trojans scored 10 runs in the second inning to open up a big advantage. Caitlin Willis was a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI. Taylor Ellis had two hits including a solo homer, and Rebecca Hanrahan finished with three hits. Hanrahan and Morgan Hurlburt combined on a five-inning no-hitter striking out nine total players and walking four. It was the Trojans’ third no-hitter of the season.
In the second contest, Greene scored eight runs in the bottom of the first to jump on Hancock early. The Trojans rapped out four singles in its first at-bat with Willis driving in a pair of runs and Rachel Turner blasting an RBI triple. Willis finished 2-for-2, Hanrahan had two hits and three RBI, and Ellis finished 2-for-4.
“Coming off last weekend, I thought we were too passive at the plate,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “We concentrated on attacking the ball early in the game. When we take too many pitches, we get in trouble.”
Greene (10-0, 13-1) plays at Oxford today.

Canastota 10, Sherburne-Earlville 1
CANASTOTA – Canastota scored all but one of its runs over the first three innings, and left-handed hitter Jessica Patterelli accounted for much of the damage in the Marauders’ loss to the Raiders Tuesday.
Patterelli went 4-for-4 with seven RBI. Patterelli homered twice and added a double. She stroked and two-run shot in the four-run second inning, and added a solo round-tripper in the sixth. “Canastota can really make it happen with the bats,” said S-E coach Michelle Parker. “They were teeing off from the opening inning.”
S-E plays at Westmoreland today.

Baseball

Greene 13, Delhi 5
GREENE – Greene left the bases loaded in the opening two innings, but also pushed across five runs during those frames to take command of Tuesday’s game with Delhi.
Greene freshmen pitchers Josh Hurlburt and Nick Viglucci split the pitching duties over six innings with each young hurler striking out four and walking one.
Matt Jones had a two-run single in the second inning for Greene and finished 3-for-5 with four RBI. Jeff Carlin had two hits and two ribbies as well. “Both freshmen pitchers didn’t get in a lot of trouble, and with one walk and four strikeouts apiece, I’ll take that any day,” said Greene coach Steve Burghardt.

Unadilla Valley 22, Oxford 2
OXFORD – Unadilla Valley’s batters exploded from the outset at Oxford Tuesday afternoon opening the game with eight runs, then adding
five more in the second to roll past the Blackhawks.
Zach Montgomery had two hits and two runs scored in the opening frame, and he capped the scoring with a grand slam. “They really jumped on us hitting the ball,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer. “Many of our (10) errors came in the later innings.”
Montgomery finished with three hits and five RBI, Nate Shackelton drove in four runs, and Brett Smith had three hits and four RBI. “UV has a pretty solid team, and they’re coming around hitting-wise,” Palmer said.
Kurt Haycook pitched three innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory.

CANASTOTA – Sherburne-Earlville committed six of its eight errors during Canastota’s six-run third inning to drop its second game this week.
Jeff Merrell went 5-for-5 to lead the Raiders. Merrell was a one-man wrecking crew driving in four runs, scoring four runs, and pitching six innings for the victory.
Jake Bohnert, Carter Cole, Matt Piazzi, and Mike Wilson had two hits each for S-E, who play at Westmoreland today.

SOUTH OTSELIC – Brookfield took advantage of OV’s errors in the field over the final three innings to expand on a 4-3 lead and pull away for the comfortable win Tuesday.
Corey Cowen went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI to lead the Beaves. Zach Noble also went 3-for-4, and pitched six innings for the victory.
“It was actually a pretty good game for four innings,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “We had some miscues in the latter three innings that led to some runs. Brookfield is a real solid team with good pitching and hitting through the lineup. They deserve to be on top of our league.”
OV plays at George Jr. Republic today.

SIDNEY – Sidney improved to 7-0 on the season Tuesday, and moved one win from a perfect regular season and eighth straight Midstate Athletic Conference title.
The Warriors’ Evan Eliason, Nick Meno, and Brian Kazalski all won in straight sets.

NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley won its second match in as many days defeating Laurens at Riverbend Golf Club Tuesday.
Laurens had the top two scores with Ryan Holmes and Brian Segima shooting 38 and 39 respectively.
UV countered with better balance across its lineup. Colin Izard’s 41 led the Storm, who improved to 6-3 on the season. Ryan Jacobs was one behind Izard at 42, Bryant Maynard shot 45, Jesse Thomas carded a 48, and Austin Glidden completed the scorecard with a 50.
