Relay For Life, St. Paul’s team-up for chicken and biscuit dinner

OXFORD – Relay For Life of Chenango County is partnering with the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for a chicken and biscuit dinner to benefit the upcoming relay, to be held July 15 and 16 at the Chenango County Fairgrounds.
From 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in the St. Paul’s Parish House, 32 Main Street, guests will have a chance to enjoy a tasty, home-cooked meal, according to Charlie McMullen of the Episcopal Church’s Outreach Committee, which will also include garlic mashed potatoes, lemon-butter broccoli and brownie sundaes for dessert.
“It’s for a great cause and this ought to be a good evening,” said McMullen of Saturday’s dinner. “Like so many, I’ve been personally impacted by cancer and wouldn’t it be great if we could find a cure?”
Two-time cancer survivor Joan Bradley, a member of both the Relay and Outreach Committees, said she, McMullen and fellow Outreach member Bonnie Emerson are hoping to make the dinner an annual event.
“This is very important to me, on a personal level. Families, friends, there are so many people I’ve known over the years that have survived cancer and there are those that haven’t, that’s why this is so important,” stated Bradley. “Whatever we can do to help find a cure for this awful, devastating disease, every little bit helps.”
The Relay For Life committee will be on hand for the family-friendly gathering, selling 50/50 raffle tickets, Relay luminaries and New York state golf passes. A special, cancer-ribbon blanket will also be raffled-off, according to Relay event chair Marie DeSarro.
“It’s exciting for us to create this new partnership with the Outreach Committee and we’d like to see this continue to flourish in the future,” added DeSarro. “We’re glad to see other communities and other groups throughout the county getting involved with Relay.”
In the six years she’s been involved with the local Relay committee, DeSarro said she’d seen the annual event grow countywide, especially in the last two to three years. She stressed that it’s important for people to realize that Relay For Life is a public event, and they don’t have to be part of a team to participate come July 15.
“It’s amazing that, even with the economic hardships people are facing, the enthusiasm is still there for Relay,” added Bradley. “It just keeps getting bigger year after year.”
The chicken and biscuit dinner is $7 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 12 and free for those 5 and under. Take-out is also available and all proceeds will benefit this year’s Relay For Life. For more information call 843-7045.
