Beadle’s 2nd annual Earth Day Celebration supports Youth Bureau
NORWICH – Last year, the first-ever Beadle’s Lounge Earth Day Celebration raised nearly $2,000 for the city’s youth bureau and the numerous programs it offers. This time around, Beadle’s Lounge owner Gary Beadle said he’d like to top that number.
The second annual Beadle’s Lounge Earth Day Celebration will kick off at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Beadle’s Lounge, 15 Lackawanna Ave., and will once again feature a full day of musical entertainment, a pair of 50/50 raffles, door prizes and – of course – Beadle’s renowned barbecue chicken dinner.
Admission for the event is $10 – which includes the barbecue dinner – and Beadle’s Earth Day T-shirts will sell for $12 all day. All proceeds from the dinner and T-shirt sales will benefit the City of Norwich Youth Bureau.
“It’s a great cause and it’s something that’s really important to us,” stated Beadle. “It’s too bad, but there are a lot of kids out there who don’t necessarily have a chance to enjoy the kinds of activities the Youth Bureau offers. If we can help out in any way with that, then it’s good for both the kids and the community.”
Performances at this year’s Earth Day Celebration will include local rockers Papa Cherry, the Bruce Beadle Band – featuring Beadle’s son Bill on bass guitar and brother Bruce on vocals and guitar – the reggae, soul and funk of The Fifth Wave and more, said Beadle.
He added he’s excited for Saturday’s entertainment and wished to thank all the musicians for donating their time and talent.
City of Norwich Youth Bureau Director Robert Mason said he was taken by surprise last year when Beadle handed him a check for $1,800. Without those funds, he added, it would have been much more difficult for the youth bureau to offer a number of its programs throughout the summer and winter seasons.
“Those funds helped a great deal with the summer trips, our summer and winter dance instruction and at the skating facility last winter,” stated Mason. “We kind of stretched it out over the course of summer and winter, and it helped to keep everything free for the kids, which is important.”
Mason added that he and the organization’s board of directors appreciates all of the time and effort that the Beadle family, their employees and the numerous volunteers put into the event and wished to thank them for their support.
“It’s so important for us to support the kids, especially in tough economic times like these,” said Beadle’s wife, Merrie. “It’s going to be a great time and it’s always nice to be able to get involved with the community.”
Merrie Beadle wished to thank the many volunteers who have offered to pitch-in this year, as well as the local businesses and individuals that have donated door prizes – Bob and Diane Adams, Lumpy’s Roadhouse and Barbecue, Taylor’s Country House, Tops, Price Chopper, Denny’s Liquors and the Park Place Lounge and Restaurant.
