Police raid parolee’s home and uncover illegal handguns
NEW BERLIN – Police raided the home of a parolee in the Village of New Berlin Tuesday and reported finding three illegal hand guns hidden in the residence.
The New Berlin Police Department, assisted by the New York State Department of Parole and the Norwich City Police Department’s K-9 unit, entered the home of Stephen J. Allen at 1 High St. Tuesday afternoon and uncovered three handguns.
New Berlin officer-in-charge Dominick Commesso said the department received a tip from another unidentified agency that guns were being kept in the home.
Police said Allen was previously convicted of fifth degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and was placed on parole until November 2012. A condition of parole made it illegal for him to possess firearms.
The New Berlin PD reported uncovering a Ruger 44 cal. revolver, a Ruger 22 cal. revolver and a Colt 45 cal. pistol from the home.
“There was no telling what may have happened, or whose hands these weapons may have ended up in. All three weapons appeared to be in good condition and would function if the trigger were pulled,” said Commesso.
Allen was arrested at the scene, and charged with three counts of third degree criminal possession of a weapon, class D felonies.
He was arraigned in North Norwich Town Court and remanded to Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail.
Commesso said the investigation is continuing and additional charges and arrests may be pending.
