NORWICH – Oneonta showed Norwich Thursday night why it is one of the best baseball teams in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference.
Connor Young held the Norwich bats in check pitching a five-hit shutout, and he was supported by a lineup that banged out 14 hits, eight of those in the first two innings to create a 5-0 lead. “Oneonta has an outstanding record (15-1), and the way they played today is indicative of the type of team they have,” said Norwich coach John Martinson.
Sean Getman tripled for Oneonta finished 3-for-4 with three RBI. Chris Pindar contributed a pair of hits and two RBI. “Oneonta played outstanding defense tonight, and they have fantastic pitching,” Martinson said. “My utmost respect goes to their team and coaching staff.”
Nick McCullough had two hits for Norwich.

NEW BERLIN – Edmeston let an 8-2 lead get away, but recovered over the final two innings to beat rival Unadilla Valley Thursday in a non-league game.
After the Storm scored seven runs in the fifth to take a 10-8 lead, the Panthers scored three in the top of the sixth. An error after two walks and a basehit tied the game, and Nate Truax had an RBI single to give Edmeston the lead. “We have four games this week, and the guys we had on the mound tonight have not pitched a lot of innings,” said UV coach Tom Locke. “We also didn’t play good defense behind our pitchers.”
Brett Smith was 3-for-4 on the UV side with a two-run triple and three total RBI.
The Panthers’ Zak Ruffles was also 3-for-4, and he scored four runs.
UV plays at Delhi today.

COPES CORNERS – G-MU jumped on Worcester from the outset scoring at least two runs in each of the first four innings on its way to a blowout win Thursday.
Brenden Zucchi had his best game of the season. Zucchi was 4-for-4 with three doubles and three runs driven in to lead the Raiders.
DeMario Reed pitched five innings for the victory giving up just one run and two hits. He struck out six and walked one.
“At the plate we’re starting to pick it up and get more hits,” said G-MU coach Rick Mohrein. “Earlier in the season we were striking out a lot. Tonight we only struck out three times. That’s a good sign.”
Corin Todd went 2-for-4 for the Raiders, who have now won four out of five games. Nate Beach finished with two RBI.

SIDNEY – Sidney finished unbeaten – and barely tested – in 11 Midstate Athletic Conference games powering past Greene on Thursday.
The Trojans tied the game at 1-1 in the third when Matt Jones legged out an infield single. An error on the throw to first allowed Alex Leone to score.
From there, Sidney went on a roll. Jon Wingate, Billy Kozak, and Andy Kozak doubled in succession to start the bottom of the third, and within moments, the Warriors had a three-run lead.
Wingate had four hits, Billy Kozak stroked three hits, while Dylan Umbra and Matt Vogel collected two hits apiece.
Nate McDonald pitched four innings for Sidney giving up just one hit for the victory.

NEW BERLIN – On senior recognition day, Unadilla Valley rallied from a deficit in the sixth inning, and scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for its third straight win on Thursday.
Charlee Weidman reached on an error to start the seventh, and stole second and third. With one out, Brittany Fairchild laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to score Weidman with the winner.
Edmeston scored three times in the sixth to take a 9-7 lead. Madison Potter had an RBI single to tie the game, and Amanda Gelatt’s double plated the go-ahead run.
UV rebounded with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Kelsey King’s two-run single tied the game, and Jordan Anderson hit a two-run homer. Anderson finished 3-for-4, and Fairchild had two hits and two RBI.
Brittney Tuttle pitched five innings of relief to earn her first victory. “Brittney is stepping up from a pitching standpoint, and our hitters are seeing the ball a lot better,” said UV coach Eileen Lawyer. “Defensively, we’re definitely playing a lot better than we have been.”

Rebecca Hanrahan went 4-for-4 with a solo home run and two RBI. Morgan Ellis and Rachel Turner each went 3-for-4, and Taylor Ellis added a solo homer.
Hanrahan allowed three hits and struck out 10 in Greene’s third mercy-rule win in the past seven days. “I initially thought playing only five-inning games was a bad thing, but we become more competitive after we see the pitcher t once through the lineup,” said Greene coach Rick Smith. “We’re hitting the ball well the second time through the order, and the defense has been strong all season behind Becca.”
Greene earned the top seed in the MAC tourney. It will likely host B-G on Monday.

OXFORD – Oxford’s Jacquelyn Heggie pitched a one-hit shutout for Oxford in Thursday’s non-league victory over visiting Norwich.
Heggie had a first-inning scoring threat by Norwich quieted when Charlene Beckwith made a tough running catch in right field for the final out of the inning. The only hit in the game for the Tornado was a double by Cassie Sutton.
“We were kind of stabbing at the ball and not finding the holes early in the game,” said Oxford coach Heather Pizza, whose club led 1-0 after four innings. “By the fifth inning, we were hitting hard ground balls through the infield.
Heggie doubled in the fifth and moved to third on an error. She scored on Emily Smith’s RBI groundout. The Blackhawks then loaded the bases after a hits from Kristen Stoddard, Logan Nuzzolese, and Teresa Morrison. Lacey Barry capped a three-run inning with a two-run single.
Barry, Stoddard, and Megan Golden finished with two hits. Heggie struck out 13 and walked just one.
