Norwich boys win third team title
Oneonta Invitational
ONEONTA – Norwich’s boys won a third team championship in as many weeks, and set two new school records on Friday at the Oneonta Invitational.
Freshman Matt Murray set the first record. He finished a close second in the 800 meters clocking 1:56.2 to break the previous mark, and his time is just 1 1/2 seconds off the New York State freshman record. Later in the meet, the Norwich distance medley team of Max Morse, Nate Ashton, Mike Barnes, and Jamie Zieno (4,000 total meters) placed second in a school-record 11:40.9. “This was a great weekend for us as most of our athletes set personal records,” said Norwich varsity boys coach, Paul Sims. “This will give us a great deal of momentum going into the championship phase of our season.”
Norwich easily won the team title by 42 points over Cooperstown on the strength of five total victories and eight other finishes within the top three. Morgan Crawford and David Layman won sprinting titles in the 100- and 200-meter dash respectively. The sprint medley team of Crawford, Layman, Murray, and Josh Favaloro earned a first, as did Patrick Taylor in the long jump.
On the girls’ side, B-G/Afton finished second in team scoring behind Oneonta. Eighth-grader Julia Knapp was a double winner for the Bears.
Norwich’s quartet of Morgan Hagenbuch, Mia Stevens, Sydney Chaffee, and Cleo Daoud won the sprint medley in 1:55.8.

Parkhurst Invitational
ENDICOTT – Oxford’s Katie Woodford topped longtime track nemesis Lindsay Seymour of Elmira in the 100- and 400-meter dashes – setting a personal-best time in the latter – and ran the winning leg in the Blackhawks’ winning 400-meter relay in Saturday’s Parkhurst Invitational at Union-Endicott.
Woodford was named the meet’s outstanding female track athlete finishing the 100 in 12.32 seconds, then flying to a win in the 400 my over a second hitting the finish line in 56.67. Woodford paired with twin sister Emily, Jessica Russo, and Haley Witchella for a season-best 49.87 seconds to nail down the relay
Emily Woodford was clear of the field in the 200-meter dash winning in 25.97 seconds, and Witchella backed up her relay win with a victory in the high jump (5-1), and a runner-up in the shot put (32-9). Witchella made it an Oxford sweep of the outstanding female awards getting the nod as the top field performer.
Coming off a win at the Oneonta Invitational Saturday, Norwich’s boys sent a limited group to the Parkhurst Invitational. The Tornado lowered another record, this time in the 1,600-meter relay. David Jones, Nate Ashton, Max Morse, and Matt Murray placed second in 3:30.76, and near 2 1/2-second drop off their previous-best time.
