Hurricanes win AAU tourney

LAKE PLACID – The Norwich Hurricanes won four basketball games at historic Lake Placid last weekend to capture the Lake Placid Primetime Challenge AAU tournament.
“It was a great experience for everyone,” said Hurricanes coach Mark Abbott. “We got to take in some of Lake Placid's storied Olympic history, my personal favorite was going to the Olympic Hockey Arena where USA beat Russia in 1980, and walking around on the surface.  And right outside the arena, literally right next to the sidewalk, is the speed skating oval where Eric Heiden won his five gold medals."
The Hurricanes’ boys won two games on Saturday defeating Lake Champlain, 49-40; and the Plattsburgh Stingers, 46-30, to reach the championship round on Sunday.
Sunday, Norwich beat Saranac Hoops, 47-26, to reach the finals. “If Saranac had beaten us, they would have been the tournament champions – regardless of how they did in their fourth game,” Abbott said. “The tournament organizers were shocked at how we handled them.”
In the finals, Norwich met a familiar foe, Ottawa Phoenix. Much like its first game on Sunday, Norwich controlled play running away for a 52-34 title victory. “We’ve played Ottawa several times in the past. They are a very good program, and very athletic,” Abbott said. “As we did all weekend, we just played great team basketball on both ends of the floor. In four games, we had solid contributions from a lot of guys.”
The Lake Placid championship pushed the Hurricanes’ spring AAU record to 12-5 with a pair of first-place finishes and one runner-up finish. The majority of Norwich’s games, Abbott said, have been played against all-star teams. The Norwich AAU team is comprised entirely of NHS high school basketball players.
