Police charge man with assaulting woman in her hotel room
NORWICH – Police charged a Norwich man with a number of felonies early Saturday morning after he allegedly climbed through a woman’s hotel window and physically assaulted her.
Norwich City Police arrested 38-year-old Robert C. Corbin Jr., and charged him with first degree burglary, a B class felony, second degree aggravated sexual abuse, a C class felony, and second degree assault, a D class felony.
Police reported first encountering Corbin at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday when he and another man where charged with disorderly conduct after the two allegedly fought each other along North Broad Street.
About five hours later, at around 6:30 a.m., police received a 911 call from the Howard Johnson’s, 75 North Broad St., where callers reported sounds of an argument and fighting from one of the first floor rooms.
Police Chief Norwich Angelino said officers and Norwich City Fire EMTs at the scene found a 37-year-old woman with injuries from an assault. She was taken to the Chenango Memorial Hospital by ambulance and later released. Angelino said the woman had rented the room alone and that Corbin specifically sought her location out. He said the two had a past relationship and that Corbin had climbed through the window against the victim’s wishes.
Police do not identify the victims of alleged sex crimes, but Angelino said, “the people involved were not strangers to each other.”
Corbin was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on bail and is scheduled to appear back in city court at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, before City Judge James Cushman.
