Local teens to compete in final round of Jr. Idol

NORWICH – On Friday, a pair of local teens will perform in the final round of the 3rd annual Central New York Radio Group Jr. Idol competition, to be held at 7 p.m. at the Oneonta Theater, 47 Chestnut St.
Shannon Stark and Kaitlyn Jackson will vie for the top spot tomorrow night, Stark in the 17 to 20 year old age category and Jackson in the 13 to 16. Both have survived two rounds of intense competition so far, and said they don’t expect things to get any easier in round three.
“There’s a lot of great talent and it’s definitely more of a challenge this year,” said Stark, who placed second overall at last year’s competition. “I’m hoping this year to finally bring it home.”
Jackson agreed and added that – while the competition hasn’t been easy – it’s been a positive experience and a lot of fun. A local favorite in her own right, the 13-year-old singer is preparing to release her debut album this summer. At this point, she said she’s simply taking every opportunity she can to get out there on the stage and perform.
To make it to the final round, Stark performed a pair of her favorite country hits, Reba McEntire’s “Turn on the Radio” and Miranda Lambert’s “Gunpowder and Lead.” On Friday, she said she’s planning to pull out a pair of Sara Evans tunes, “Born to Fly” and “Suds in the Bucket.”
For Jackson, it was LeAnne Rimes’ “Blue” and Jo De Messina’s “Heads Carolina, Tails California.” Tomorrow night will find the young country vocalist performing another Rimes song, “Cowboy Sweetheart,” as well as Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb.”
At stake for the pair of singers is a $200 savings bond, a netbook computer and a custom-written original song, to be recorded at Impact Studios. Second and third place winners will take home a $100 and $50 savings bond, respectively.
“Everyone has done really great and there are some fantastic performers,” said Jackson. “There’s definitely going to be some competition.”
The most challenging part, said Stark, is choosing the right song.
“It’s all about getting the audience’s attention,” she added.
There is no cost of admission for the competition and the theater will open at 6 p.m. For more information on the Jr. Idol competition, visit www.wsrkfm.com.
