Stroll for Sixty: Walk to stop diabetes

SHERBURNE – It’ll only take an hour, and the support for diabetes research will be well worth it.
“Stroll for Sixty” (as in minutes) is a fundraiser initiated by Sherburne Earlville Middle School student Morgan Johnson to raise awareness and money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Johnson was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just 15 months of age and has participated in fundraising walk-a-thons in the past.
“She wanted to do something different, and in her own town,” said her mother, Heidi.
The walk, open to the public of all ages, takes place from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. June 11 at the Sherburne-Earlville Stadium Track. There will also be music, light refreshments and activities. For more information, or to pre-register, call 315-837-4238 or 315-723-1342. Registration will also be held at 9:15 a.m. prior to the event.
Type 1 diabetes is a chronic (lifelong) disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to properly control blood sugar levels. Usually diagnosed in children and young adults, type 1 was previously known as juvenile diabetes.
S-E district students in the middle and high school are helping promote “Stroll for Sixty” by creating posters and distributing them.
“When we met with school Superintendent Gayle Hellert, she encouraged my daughter to proceed, offered use of the facilities and was enthusiastic with her support. We’re trying to get as many community members interested,” said Heidi.
