Owego wins pitching duel, ousts NHS from playoffs

Baseball

Owego 3, Norwich 2
NORWICH – Owego scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning to win its first-round sectional playoff game over Norwich Friday.
Steve Tatich drew a lead-off walk, stole second, and he scored on Stephen Yanchus’ game-winning single to left field. “Both teams played pretty sharp,” said Norwich coach John Martinson. “Their pitcher (Jake Shelley) was really outstanding, and Mackay (Hotaling) did a nice job of pitching for us.”
Norwich (7-6-1) grabbed the early lead on Nate Winans’ RBI single in the second inning. After Owego pushed two runs across in the fourth, Norwich tied the game in the fifth. Winans led off with a single, and Dennis Oralls was substituted for Winans as a pinch-runner. Oralls stole second, then came home on Nick McCullough’s RBI single. McCullough topped the Tornado hitters with a 3-for-4 day and two stolen bases. Winans was 2-for-3.
“It was a game that came down to the last inning,” Martinson said. “It was a great baseball game and a shame someone had to lose. We played great baseball, and we can’t be disappointed other than we didn’t get the win.”

Seton Catholic Central 1, Oxford 0
BINGHAMTON – Upset-minded Oxford came up short in the Section IV Class C quarterfinals giving up a single unearned run in the second inning, Friday at Seton Catholic Central.
Saints catcher Connor Ligeikis reached on an error to start Seton’s second, and Neil McCormack walked. A groundout advanced each run, and Connor Ackerman’s sacrifice fly accounted for the game’s lone scoring.
Seton sophomore Patrick Gosney held Oxford’s offense in check pitching a two-hit shutout. He struck out 13 and walked one. “(Gosney) didn’t look overpowering, but he was sneaky fast,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer.
Andrew Golden and Cameron Heggie had Oxford’s lone basehits. Blackhawks sophomore hurler, Nate Head, gave up just three hits striking out five and walking two. The Blackhawks reached the quarterfinals knocking off number two-seeded Union Springs earlier in the week. “We only graduate one senior, and I am hopeful that all of these kids come back,” Palmer said. “We finished the season strong, and I think that can carry into next year.”

Boys’ Tennis

Section IV State Qualifier
BINGHAMTON – Norwich’s tennis season ended this weekend at the Section IV state qualifier, but not before gaining substantial experience that could pay off down the road.
In singles, eighth-grader Matt Craig dropped his opening match to eventual champion Alex Tsai of Binghamton, then fell in three sets in the consolation round to Colin Cory of Johnson City, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. Eli Craig, a senior for the Tornado, dropped each of his matches in straight sets. “At this point in the season, it was all gravy for Eli,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. Craig qualified for the tournament winning the Class B title last Monday. “Matt played a credible second match, and he saved three match points.”
In doubles play, eighth-graders Colin and Zan Stewart won one of their first two matches on Friday to reach the consolation semifinals on Saturday. The Stewarts defeated Maine-Endwell’s Michael Pham and Sahaib Fasih, 7-5, 7-5. Saturday, the young cousins were eliminated in straight sets by Elmira’s Dominick and Jacob Parfianowicz.
“The goal (for Colin and Zan) was to get to the second day, and to see that caliber of tennis,” Coach Stewart said. “If you make it to the second day, you’re playing with the champions. This will only set them up for a solid future.”
