Cause of Walnut Street blaze still under investigation

NORWICH – Police and fire officials continue to look into the cause of a fire which ravaged a multi-family dwelling on Walnut Street last Thursday.

The fire was reported by a neighbor at approximately 2:45 a.m. on Thursday. Officers from the Norwich Police Department were the first on the scene. According to Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo, they discovered smoke and flames coming from the two-story residence at 12 Walnut St.

Crews from the Norwich Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter and began battling the blaze. Volunteers from the Oxford and Sherburne Fire Departments also responded.

According to Chawgo, the residence was divided into two apartments, with a retired couple living on the first floor and a younger couple with a small child living upstairs. No one was home at the time of the fire.
