NHS coach charged with locker room spying
NORWICH – A complaint yesterday by Norwich School District officials resulted in a police investigation and the subsequent arrest of high school teaching assistant and swimming coach Jonathan L. Aikins.
Aikins, 28, was taken into custody at his residence – without incident – at 3:30 p.m. Thursday. He was charged with second degree unlawful surveillance, a class E felony.
“At approximately 1:45 p.m., school administrators alerted the Norwich Police to an audio/visual recording device that was found in a locker room at the Norwich High School on Midland Drive,” stated Police Chief Joseph Angelino, who added the investigation determined there were people present in the girl’s locker room at the time.
Aikins was arraigned in front of City Judge James Downey and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $1,000 bail. He will re-appear in Norwich City Court on Tuesday during the morning session, added police.
A search warrant, issued by the Chenango County District Attorney’s Office, allowed police to continue their investigation, this time at Aikins’ 47 Silver St. residence. Police declined to indicate what items were seized, nor did they elaborate on what evidence tied the surveillance equipment to Aikins.
Norwich City School District Superintendent Gerard O’Sullivan said counselors are working with both students and staff at the high school, and that the district will be putting a plan together to work through the situation.
“As a parent, I’m stunned. As an educator in the district, I’m disgusted,” O’Sullivan said. “I don’t know what to say, really. I’m very thankful for the Norwich Police and their prompt, quick action.”
O’Sullivan said Aikins was immediately suspended. According to the superintendent, the video contained images of female students in the locker room.
“Police have all the evidence and we’re just waiting for their report and guidance on what to do next,” added O’Sullivan. “We had some very brave and intelligent students promptly alert Mrs. Schuchman (the school’s principal)” to the situation.
