Greene man arrested for assaulting trooper with bricks

GREENE – Derek W. Coviello, 38, of 265 Standish Road in Greene, was arrested Thursday for assaulting a New York State Trooper on May 20 in the Village of Greene.

During the incident, Coviello allegedly struck Trooper Christopher D. Marinelli in the head with two bricks. Marinelli suffered a head injury as a result of the attack. He was treated at Binghamton General Hospital and released. He is scheduled to return to active duty today.

According to the New York State Police Sgt. Gary Leahy, Marinelli and fellow Trooper Charles Tuttle encountered Coviello while responding to a 911 call placed by the Greene man’s parents, who described their son as “having a panic attack” and in an “extremely paranoid” state.

When the two officers arrived, Coviello had a brick in each hand and was heading south on North Chenango Street, banging on the doors of residences and requesting assistance from police, Leahy said. Coviello proceeded to the Citizen’s Bank at the corner of North Chenango and Genesee streets, where he damaged the glass before trying to cross Genesee street.

The troopers attempted to subdue Coviello using pepper spray and a taser, neither of which had any effect, Leahy reported. According to the sergeant, he was finally “taken down after a violent struggle” during which he hit Marinelli with the bricks.
