Chenango County Pigskin Classic 7-on-7 Football Tournament kicks-off in August
NORWICH – The first-ever Chenango County Pigskin Classic 7-on-7 Youth Football Tournament will kick-off on August 5 at Galena Park in North Norwich, and organizers are hoping to sign-up another 11 teams for the event.
According to Tournament Director Steve Franklin, nine teams have already registered for the tournament, a passing-only, touch football competition that is open to all kids ages 13 to 18.
“It’s basically back yard football,” said Franklin. “It’s like what we did as kids, call up everyone from the neighborhood, pick up teams and go throw the ball around.”
The tournament will be split into junior and senior divisions, 13 to 15 and 18 and under.
In November, Franklin – along with fellow Tournament Director Ed Holmquist, Jack Roque and Mike Marango – formed the non-profit organization Pride of the Paw, in preparation for what they hope will become an annual sporting tradition in Chenango County. Franklin said it’s important for people to realize that the tournament is in no way associated with a specific school football program and is open to all who are interested.
“It’s not about what high school you go to or which town you are from,” stated Franklin. “The only restriction we have is on the age of the participants. Anybody can put a team together, whether it’s a kid, parent or a coach. We just want to give kids an opportunity to play football and have some fun doing so.”
According to Holmquist, all proceeds from the event will go right back into the community, giving underprivileged children an opportunity to attend other football camps and combines, which they may not have been able to afford.
“We just want to get kids excited about football,” he added. “This tournament gives our youth a chance to showcase their skills and have fun at the same time.”
The Pride of the Paw organization are currently seeking volunteers for the August event, including officials, people to man the food booths, ball boys and parking attendants. Franklin wished to thank Gary Brightman, who recently came aboard as a consultant for the tournament, for all his help.
Each team will be charged a non-refundable entry fee of $250 – which will include team uniforms – and is guaranteed at least six games if 20 teams sign-up, said Franklin. Entry forms for the tournament are available online at www.chenangocountypigskinclassic.com., and may also be picked-up at the Norwich Family YMCA, Chenango Welding Supply and the Oxford NBT.
Players must have a parent or guardian-signed waiver form and their birth certificate on hand at the event registration on August 5. For more information contact Franklin at 316-7724 or Holmquist at 316-8745.
