NHS senior, BOCES student earns scholarship

NORWICH – Norwich High School senior Nate Perry, who is a member of SkillsUSA and the National Technical Honor Society, is more than a little excited for his upcoming graduation and subsequent enrollment at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Before he can graduate, however, he’s got to make a trip to Kansas City, where he’ll be one of four students nationwide to receive a $1,000 NTHS scholarship.
In an effort to promote outstanding student achievement within career and technical education, SkillsUSA partnered with NTHS, encouraging chapters across the country to consider participation in the honor society as part of its annual program, according to the SkillsUSA website, www.skillsusa.org. Students who join the honor society are expected to demonstrate academic achievement, skills development, leadership, honesty, responsibility and good character.
According to BOCES Visual Communications Instructor Sandy Sheldon, where Perry is in his second year, the student has consistently displayed all of the above.
“Nate’s a very good student, he’s dedicated and he’s willing to go above and beyond and take on extra projects,” said Sheldon. “At first, he didn’t give himself enough credit, but I could tell he had the ability and it’s been nice to see him grow in confidence. I think he surprised himself.”
Following his upcoming graduation, Perry said he plans to major in New Media Interactive Development, a four-year program at RIT. He added that – while high school was certainly a fun and positive experience – he’s ready to move on.
“I’m more excited than I am nervous, but I know it’s going to be a big change,” said Perry. “It’s going to be different being on my own and it’s a lot of responsibility, but I’m ready for it.”
As a state reporter with SkillsUSA, Perry said his experience was an extremely positive one, sending him to Albany, the Niagra Falls region and Washington, D.C., where he met with Congressman Michael Arcuri’s Education Assistant and Congressman Bill Owens. It’s been a period of positive growth and opportunity, he added.
“I see myself as more outgoing now and it’s definitely given me more opportunities than I would’ve had,” stated Perry of his time with SkillsUSA and the NTHS. “It’s definitely been a great experience.”
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled work force, whose mission is to “help its members become world-class workers, leaders and responsible citizens,” according to the SkillsUSA website. According to Sheldon, that mission is a successful one when it comes to students like Perry.
“I’m really excited for him,” she added.
