County not taking advantage of drug plan

NORWICH – Chenango County isn’t participating in a prescription drug discount card program that its sponsors say has saved New York users more than $50 million at the pharmacy counter.
More than half of the state’s counties, 43 of 62, have opted for the New York State Association of Counties-sponsored program.
“Nearly two million prescriptions have been filled using these discount cards saving participants an average of 48 percent off the full retail price,” a NYSAC press release states.
Chenango County Clerk of the Board RC Woodford said the county was “not yet” participating in the program, but he was planning to have someone come in and make a presentation to the Chenango County Board of Supervisors.
NYSAC has been working with New York-based ProAct, Inc. since 2005 to develop this program. It is designed to help New Yorkers lower their cost for pharmaceuticals, one of the fastest growing health care costs.
“This program has been a win-win for New Yorkers. By championing this prescription drug program, our county leaders have been able to help their residents save money and achieve better health outcomes because they are able to fill their prescriptions,” said NYSAC Executive Director Stephen J. Acquario. “This program has been a lifeline for those who need pharmaceuticals, but do not have health insurance.”
