Our Daily Bread Food Closet seeking additional volunteers

NORWICH – For nearly three decades, the Our Daily Bread Food Closet – located at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 37 West Main Street – has served Chenango County and its communities by providing food to those in need, from 10 a.m. to noon and 3:30 to 5 p.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Sponsored by a number of area churches – including the United Church of Christ, Broad Street United Methodist, First Baptist and the Emmanuel Episcopal Church – the food pantry benifits from the support of approximately two dozen volunteers.
According to District Rector Chuck Taylor and UCC Pastor Joseph Connolly, the pantry is currently looking to fill several key volunteer positions: a desk person, pantry closet packer and truck crew.
• The desk person position requires volunteers to greet and welcome clients, assist them in completing intake forms and verifying family members, as well as choosing whichever bonus items they’d prefer for their food packages.
• As a pantry closet packer, volunteers will prepare food packages for clients, the size of which is determined by the number of people in each family unit. Occasional lifting of between 20 and 40 pounds is required, however, when bringing completed orders to clients.
• Two to three times per month, the Our Daily Bread Food Closet receives supplies from the Food Bank of Central New York in Syracuse. Several volunteers are needed to form a truck crew capable of unloading pallets and transporting cases of food into the pantry’s storage room or basement. Hand trucks are used, but some lifting of full cases of canned and frozen foods is required.
Connolly said it’s important for people to realize that every dollar that the food pantry receives is used to purchase the foodstuffs which serve between 600 and 700 Chenango County families every month. According to Taylor, no one who comes to the pantry is turned away, as many families are struggling due to the current economic situation. Some people, he added, are desperate to put food on the table at this time.
“Joe and I would both like to commend all of the people that have volunteered over the years, and we’re especially thankful for those individuals and organizations that have supported us financially,” stated Taylor. “We have an annual budget of around $160,000 and without those contributions we would struggle to provide this service to the community.”
Both clergymen agreed that the need is there and, in many cases, the current economic situation is simply beyond families’ abilities to handle. This makes the efforts of the pantry’s volunteers even more crucial, added Connolly.
“We’re presently looking for more volunteers and there are some areas where we need the assistance,” said Taylor.
