Chenango County Amateur golf tourney returns
PLYMOUTH – The Chenango County Amateur Golf Tournament returns after a decade-plus absence, Saturday, July 30 at Canasawacta Country Club.
The tournament is one day and open to men, women, and children in 11 possible categories. “This is a tournament where we really wanted to get kids involved,” said tournament committee co-chair, Mark DeMellier. “Timmy Carson (C.C.C. owner) gave us the tools for the tournament, so we took this date.”
Divisions available are grades 6-8 (nine noles), grades 9-12, men’s scratch championship, ladies’ scratch championship, men’s senior championship, ladies’ senior championship, men’s super senior, ladies’ super senior, men’s A flight (handicap index 8-0-16.0), men’s B flight (handicap index 16.1-plus), women’s A flight (index of 18.0-plus). Additionally, for an additional fee men’s and women’s senior scratch players may register concurrently for the overall men’s and women’s scratch titles.
Any flight division participants must have an established USGA handicap as of July 15. Players entering flight divisions will forfeit their entry fee if a handicap cannot be verified.
Trophies will be awarded to each division champion along with prizes. Monies for prizes are dependent on the number of entries in each division, DeMellier said. “We just want to build on the good job the guys from the Afton area did for years in keeping the tournament going,” DeMellier said.
To be eligible for the tournament, a player must either be a resident of Chenango County or a member of a Chenango County-based golf club. Registration forms for the tournament will be available on July 5 at area golf clubs. The entry form will also appear in upcoming issues of the Norwich/Sidney Pennysavers and The Evening Sun. DeMellier said the site of the tournament will move to different area courses each year.
Tournament fees range from $15 for the nine-hole event for juniors in grades 6-8, to $60 for the men’s championship, a 36-hole event to be contested in one day. All other 18-hole fees are $30*. (*The fee for senior women who also register for the overall women’s championship is $40. The fee for senior men who enter the men’s championship is $60).
Golf carts are not included in the entry fee. For further information, contact Charley Winn at Canasawacta Country Club at 336-2685.
