Norwich PBA honors retirees
NORWICH – Two of Norwich’s finest retired this year after 20 years of service to the community. On Saturday, their commitment and dedication were celebrated with a dinner in their honor.
Deputy Chief Dale C. Smith, Jr. and Sergeant Craig L. Berry began their careers with the City of Norwich Police on the same day in March of 1991. Berry retired on April 15 at the rank of sergeant; Smith as a deputy chief on May 28. Each had 20 years with the department.
The two were the guests of honor Saturday at a retirement celebration sponsored by the Norwich Police Benevolent Association. Hon. Lelan G. Brookins presided as master of ceremonies at the event, which was held at the American Legion in Norwich.
“I hate to see these guys go,” said Norwich Police Chief Joseph Angelino, who praised Smith for his service, dedication and loyalty; and Berry for the precision, expertise and confidence with which he did his job.
He thanked the two men “on behalf of a grateful city” for their service, as he presented them with their retired shields. They also received plaques bearing their actual duty shields, courtesy of the Norwich PBA.
Their wives, Summer and Melissa, were presented with flowers by PBA President Reuben Roach and Vice President Gard Turner.
Deputy Dustin Smietana of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office also presented Smith and Berry with plaques honoring their retirement.
“Both have made a difference during their exemplary careers,” he said, thanking them for their years of service.
The men also received proclamations from the City of Norwich; citations from the U.S. House of Representatives, signed by Richard Hanna; Senate proclamations courtesy of NYS Senator Thomas Libous; and proclamations from the NYS Assembly, courtesy of Assemblyman Clifford Crouch. Smith also received a citation from the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police.
Members of the City of Norwich Police past and present attended the event, as well as friends and family members of the retirees, city officials and representatives from other law enforcement agencies.
