Schools of the Past: Guilford Districts 1 and 2

The travel route in the township of Guilford will take us to the southern part of the township for the brief information on the first district and to the eastern part of the town for the second district. The lack of historical information regarding these two districts is a definite point of frustration. The school registers, if they are available, have not been researched and as this writer has written numerous times before, the pages of this chapter wilt definitely remain open if information is obtained! Let us now relate the information that is available.

DISTRICT #1 COOPER
This schoolhouse and I regret that the photo is not available is located on the corner of County Road 38 and Cooper Schoolhouse Road. The schoolhouse is still standing and somewhat remodeled as it is a private dwelling at this time. Located just behind and to the east of the building is the Cooper cemetery and almost directly behind the Bainbridge Reservoir.
The now deceased Fred Neidlinger, a lifetime resident of that area attended this district school in August of 2008 he forwarded me at my request, as an acquaintance of both Fred and his wife, what he remembered about attending this schoolhouse. His memories are quoted verbatim as he wrote them.
“School Days Memories”
August 8, 2008
“My memory like my handwriting is not very good any more. This is what little I can remember about attending school in the Cooper Schoolhouse. A Miss Isabel was District Superintendent and one teacher I remember about 1930 was Ruby Wilbur.
There was a large wood burning stove in the center of the room but I don’t know who started it in the winter. I went there from 1929 to 1932 (as I remember). The pupils who attended were two Guilford girls, six Baldwin’s, three Warner’s, four Neidlinger’s, two Silvey’s and one Week’s. I hope you can read some of this.”
As I related above this information was forwarded to me in August of 2008 and at that time he had lost his wife in May of this same year and in December of this same year, he passed away. A finer couple than both of them would be hard pressed to find.

The second district as related above was located in the more eastern section of the township and we are most fortunate to have a photo of the school and the students identified in the photo. This is all the information that is available at this time relevant to the school. The how, when, how much historical information has not surfaced as of this date.

DISTRICT #2 SHUMWAY HILL
Traveling the County Road #36 between Norwich and Guilford approximately 6 miles, you come to the four corners intersection of Wahlberg/White’s Hill Road (one of the most beautiful views of the Chenango County hills). Turning right on White’s Hill to the next intersection, this road becomes Shumway Hill finally intersecting with Route 8 just north of Mt. Upton. The students identified in this photo are as follows: Art Miller (little boy by tree), Elma Zoerb, Ethel Carkhuff (teacher) Charley Wilson, Gladys Zoerb and Mary Lorimer.
With this scant historical information we close this chapter of Guilford District school history to return again!
