Oxford Legion Auxiliary installs officers
OXFORD – The Oxford American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) held the installment of its new officers on June 13 during their regular monthly meeting. The new 2011- 2012 officers are Cindy Hubschmitt, President; Sylvia Witchella, First Vice; Sandy Dain, Second Vice; Barbara Bogie, Secretary; Julie Blanford, Treasurer and Membership Chairman; Lillian Quinn, Chaplin; Eileen Lewis, Historian; and Roberta Knoll, Sergeant-at-Arms.
The American Legion Auxiliary is the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization. They are proud to be helping for over ninety years of “Service Not Self, for Veterans, God and Country.” They focus on three major areas: Veterans, Young People, Americanism and the community. On the local level, the ALA has over 200 members, giving many volunteer hours to help the community.
On the second Sunday of each month, the Auxiliary works at the All-You-Can-Eat fundraising breakfast from 7:30 to 11 a.m. at the Oxford Legion Post #376. They’re also involved in youth activities, such as the Oratorical Contest and Girls State; nursing homes; food & clothing banks; fund raisers like the annual Garage Sale Day; the Harvest Benefit Dinner for the Sally Finch Memorial Fund; and the distribution of Memorial Poppies. The Auxiliary also helps the Legion in any way or with any project they can such as assisting with the John Sherman Scholarship Fund. Funds raised go back into the community to aid in literacy, education, charities and more.
The Oxford Auxiliary is looking for young people interested in Junior membership for volunteer community service. Anyone is eligible, age 18 years and younger, who is an immediate family member of an American Legion member or a deceased veteran.
