Oxford voters approve capital project
OXFORD – The Oxford Academy and Central School District has received the approval of its residents to proceed with a proposed $11,316,216 capital project.
The matter was decided Thursday by voter referendum held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Oxford High School. According to District Clerk Michele Rice, 213 voted in favor and 109 against the first of two propositions on the ballot. The $10,967,591 project will renovate and refurbish each of the district’s existing structures and athletic fields at the high school.
The second proposition, to construct a $339,625 multipurpose building to replace Blackhawk Stadium’s existing concession stand/press box, also passed with 155 yes votes to 145 no votes.
According to Rice, 311 voters visited the polls yesterday and 19 absentee ballots were cast for a total of 330 ballots. 333 people voted in a referendum last fall, where a previous version of the proposed project was defeated.
Superintendent Randy Squier thanked all those who provided input during the four plus years that went into planning the project.
“This project will enhance the learning environment the children of Oxford deserve,” Squier said. “When this phase of renovations are completed students and staff will learn in an environment that is energy efficient, safe, flexible, and inviting.”
