County departments begin moving offices

NORWICH – After planning for more than a decade, Chenango County officials began moving government offices last week to free up space for several departments that have been asking for more.
The Department of Social Services’ move across Court Street to the vacant former sheriff’s office and jail last year marked the beginning of the shifts. On Vacant space in the former DSS wing was occupied by offices and conference rooms of the county chairman, attorney, clerk of the board, and supervisors.
Supervisors who sit on the Agriculture, Buildings and Grounds Committee made their way last Tuesday to a new meeting room on the second third floor of the COB’s 1991 wing. The supervisors’ boardroom, located just across the hall, is void of furniture and fittings presently, but Chenango County Clerk of the Board RC Woodford said lawmakers should plan on attending next month’s meeting of the board there.
The supervisors boardroom on the third floor of the original county government office building is believed to have served as such since the facility was constructed back in 1960, said Woodford.
The boardroom has new carpeting and will feature a retractable wall. Furniture and audio/visual computer equipment is scheduled to be installed any day now, Woodford said.
The next domino to fall is the personnel department, which will move into the former chairman’s and county attorney’s offices. The Chenango County Public Defender’s office will move into the former chairman’s conference room, and the Chenango County District Attorney’s staff; where personnel was. Woodford said the DA would also take up additional room from within the existing Chenango County Youth Bureau office. Both the PD and DA have repeatedly claimed that their existing spaces are too small and prohibit private conferencing with victims, police officers and witnesses.
New York Sixth Judicial District offices will be the next entity to expand with the original building, though the timing is unknown.
District Executive Karen Ambrovik said she was “optimistic and hopeful” that vacated space would meet the needs of the court. Officials from the district were currently arranging a meeting with county Chenango County Board of Supervisors Chairman Richard B. Decker.
