NORWICH – The Chenango County 4-H Program is pleased to announce the 2011 recipient of the Senior Dairy Scholarship. This year’s winner is Scott Smith, son of Jeff and Deanna Smith of South Plymouth. Scott will be graduating from Norwich High School in June and will be attending SUNY Morrisville in the fall to study Agricultural Business.
Scott, a four year member of the Chenango County 4-H Program, resides on the family dairy farm and enjoys working with his family to improve their herd of dairy cattle. Although there are three different dairy breeds at Smith Farm, Scott’s favorites are the little, brown Jerseys. Scott’s goals are to breed a functional type herd with good genetic potential and to have “smoking sacks with venation” as he likes to say during 4-H dairy judging practices!
Citing 4-H as a major contributor in his decision to remain in agriculture and not go into another career field, Scott has enjoyed participating in dairy bowl, dairy judging, Dairy Discovery, dairy rodeo, Dairy Day, and other 4-H trips and programs. The trips and learning activities associated with the Chenango County 4-H Dairy Program have narrowed down Scott’s career choices to dairy cattle type evaluator, dairy herd manager, or dairy mating specialist. Scott says that “4-H helps you to figure out what you’re interested in and how to get to where you want to be in life.”
A few of Scott’s 4-H career highlights (so far) include: Novice Champion Dairy Showman 2008 Chenango County Fair, 1st place Regional Senior Dairy Bowl Team in 2010, 4th place Senior Dairy Judging Team at the 2011 NYS Spring Dairy Carousel, and all of the fun and friends that go along with 4-H. Scott has also spent quite a bit of time volunteering his time to help out as well, recently assuming a leadership role in the remodeling of the Harry L. Case Building at the Chenango County fairgrounds.
Scott is also actively involved in other activities as well, including High School Football where he played defensive end, DCMO BOCES Carpentry program, hunting and fishing, as well as running his own fire wood business. Scott would like to thank his parents and grandparents for all they have done to help him succeed in life. Congratulations Scott and good luck at Morrisville this fall.
