Oxford Girl Scouts design new Camp Out patch
OXFORD – The can-do spirit of some clever local Girl Scout leaders and their girls was recently exemplified when the Girl Scouts of Service Unit 332 designed their own much wanted Camp Out patch. The idea of a custom-made patch turned into a creative project that involved all of the scouts. Soon, these girls will be proudly displaying embroidered Service Unit Camp Out (SUCO) patches on their uniforms …that they made possible!
The Daisies, Brownies, Juniors and Cadettes of the Oxford-McDonough area make up Service Unit (SU) 332 of the NY Penn Pathways Council. The Unit leader and the troop leaders were making plans for another exciting annual SU trip to Camp Amahami in Deposit, NY. Amahami has over 450 acres of forest, field, and a lake where campers enjoy the modern troop house and lodge amenities. Activities include equestrian, wilderness adventures, swimming, general arts, visual arts and lots more. The leaders thought it would be great for the girls to have their own patch that they would receive for going camping. Since it’s the aim of the Girl Scouts to empower girls and to help build character and confidence through activities and by earning badges, the SUCO patch designing seemed like a great project. After checking the prices they found that making their own patch was affordable. The troop leader and co-leader for Troop 212 made it an activity at the camp out.
Once at Camp Amahami, the girls were given materials and were told to draw what they would like as the SU camp out patch design. To keep things simple and graphic, they were restricted to four different colors to use in their artwork. They all worked very hard on their drawings and did a wonderful job, but only one could become the SUCO patch.
The leaders had the difficult job of jurying the art to narrow the field down to three drawings. Then all the girls were given the opportunity to vote privately for their choice of the three designs. The voting was kept top secret and the winner was revealed as an after dinner surprise.
The winner of the new SUCO patch design was Maggie Squier, from Troop 473 led by Denise and Gary Moore. Her design included images of fun things from the weekend up to the point of the drawing. Maggie, daughter of Maureen and Randall Squier of Oxford, is a very talented young artist.
Only the girls from SU 332 who have attended the annual service unit campout will be able to receive this patch. These first forty-two Girl Scouts are excited to receive the new patch when it comes in and anxious to be able to wear it proudly on the back of their vest/sash.
