Smyrna Citizens Band announces summer concert schedule

SMYRNA – The Smyrna Citizens Band will kick off its 93rd year of summer performances at 7:30 p.m. on July 4 in the bandstand above the Smyrna Public Library, 7 East Main St.
Monday’s concert will be the first of six held weekly through Aug. 8 and will feature a variety of musical selections, beginning with the “Star Spangled Banner,” a long-held tradition with the band, said Smyrna Town Clerk Geraldine Day.
Written locally, the “Smyrna Citizens Band March” will follow, with renditions of “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “American Folk Suite,” “Salute to America,” “God of Our Fathers,” “Hands Across the Sea,” “Salute the Duke,” “Promenade,” “God Bless America,” “Stars and Stripes Forever” and more.
The annual concerts are made possible through public funds administered by the New York State Council on the Arts and distributed by the Chenango County Council of the Arts, according to Day. Support funds are also received from the Town and Village of Smyrna.
Day said she hopes people plan to enjoy this year’s series of summer concerts and called it a great way to experience an unique taste of small town Americana. Those attending may bring their own lawn chairs or simply sit in their cars and listen to a diverse group of musicians who love a chance to perform, she added.
Refreshments will be available from Ope’s Dog Stop and the Methodist Church will be serving homemade pie. For more information, contact Day at 627-6269.
