Cuomo to close Camp Georgetown, 6 other state prisons

ALBANY – Governor Andrew Cuomo announced yesterday the closure of seven prisons across New York, including the minimum security prison Camp Georgetown in Madison County.
According to Cuomo, closing these prisons will eliminate approximately 38,000 unused and unneeded beds and will save taxpayers $72 million this year and $112 million the next.
“The state’s prison system has been too inefficient and too costly,” said Cuomo. “[This plan] succeeds in targeting facilities for closure without compromising public safety.”
Despite assurances from the Governor’s office, a statement released by the New York State Public Employees Federation yesterday states that the closings “come at a time when staff reductions and crowded conditions have resulted in an increase in violence at these facilities.”
“Assualts...suicides...and contraband all increased from 2009 to 2010,” said PEF President Ken Brynien.
The lack of advance notice, according to the PEF press release, made it so there was no chance for debate on the impact of the closing, especially to the communities and employees of the prisons.
“We will work closely to ensure impacted areas are given substantial state aid to help them create jobs ... transform local communities,” said Cuomo. According to the Governor’s office the prison population has declined by 22 percent since 1999 and these closures will help consolidate and cut costs.
Camp Georgetown, located in neighboring Madison County, employs 85 people and houses 100 offenders. This announcement comes just two years after the closure of Camp Pharsalia, the former minimum security prison in Chenango County. According to a Camp Georgetown representative, who asked to remain anonymous, notice was required to be announced 60 days prior to actual closure of the facilities.
