Chenango hosts ‘Festival of Farms’ next weekend
NORWICH – The 4th Annual Festival of Farms will be held on July 16 & 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 12 farms throughout Chenango County.
On Saturday, July 16, you can choose from six farm open houses to visit. The farms include: Baker’s Maple, Bainbridge; Berries Blue, South Otselic; Charlie’s U-pick Blueberries, Chenango Forks; Enough…and a Little Bit More 4 Seasons Market, Greene; Heather-Rayne Alpacas, Bainbridge; and STOX Dairy Farm, Bainbridge.
Then on Sunday, July 17, there will be more open houses at six different farms. Sunday’s farms include: Goat Lady Soap Co., New Berlin; Lamb’s Quarters Organic Farm, Plymouth; Neilsen’s Mini Winery, New Berlin; Quarry Brook Farm, Sherburne; Red Barn Alpacas, Norwich; and Whispering Pines Bakery & Crafts, Norwich.
Our farmers are excited to open their doors and show you what they do for a living. Visiting local farms during this open house weekend will allow consumers see where their food comes from, gain an appreciation for food production and develop a relationship with their local farmer. Multiple farms will be offering farm tours and tastings. You can visit Red Barn Alpacas and Heather-Rayne Alpacas and see what goes into the fiber making process and what it takes to care for a herd of alpacas. With some weather cooperation the blueberries will be ripe for picking at Berries Blue and Charlie’s U-pick Blueberries. STOX Dairy Farm will be giving away free dairy products and Whispering Pines Bakery will have taste testing and solar light making demonstrations.
For details about each farm events, addresses with directions, and more information about the event visit www.cce.cornell.edu/chenango/festival-of-farms or ‘like’ us on Facebook at Chenango County Festival of Farms. Again this year there will be Festival of Farms Passports for people in the community to take to each farm and have signed. Once three farms signed the passport you can enter it for a Local Products Gift Basket drawing. Passports must be postmarked by July 22 to be eligible for the drawing.
If you have questions about the farms in your community or where you can purchase local products, please contact Rebecca Daubert at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chenango County at 334-5841 x14 or rad282@cornell.edu. This event is sponsored by Senator Libous, the Buy from the Backyard program, http://buyfromthebackyard.com, and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chenango County.
