Craig to take chamber’s top spot

NORWICH – News anchor Steve Craig will soon be taking on a new role. This one won’t be in broadcasting, however. Instead, the long-time television newsman will be stepping in as head of the county’s lead business advocacy group, Commerce Chenango.
Commerce Chenango’s board of directors made the announcement Thursday. Craig will serve as the organization’s president and CEO, the position previously held by Maureen Carpenter.
Carpenter, who spent four years at the chamber’s helm, left in April after accepting a position with the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce in Kentucky. Sewain Conklin has served as interim director since her departure, and will continue to do so until Craig steps into his new role on Aug. 1.
“Steve’s breadth of knowledge of the area, vision for Chenango County’s future, and passion for improving the economy and quality of life in the county were just a few of the reasons that he has been chosen for this position,” said Commerce Chenango Board Member Kevin Walsh, who chaired the selection committee.
“I am confident that he will represent not only Commerce Chenango, but Chenango County as a whole, in an impressive manner.”
Craig beat out an extensive pool of candidates for the sought-after position.
“The Selection Committee went through a rigorous process, interviewing a wonderful field of candidates before deciding on Steve,” said Commerce Chenango’s board chairman, Jim Currie. “We believe he will take us in a dynamic new direction.”
Craig began his career in broadcasting with WBNG-TV in Binghamton, where he served as a reporter and anchor. He went on to work as an executive news producer with WNEP-TV in Pennsylvania and then with ABC affiliate WEWS in Cleveland before becoming chief legal correspondent for a station in West Palm Beach, Fla. He returned to Binghamton in 1990, stepping in as lead news anchor for FOX40. Eight years later, he moved to NewsChannel 34.
He and his family have lived in Norwich since returning to the area. His wife, Donna Wood-Craig, serves as Development Coordinator for Colorscape Chenango in addition to her role as Development and Community Relations Coordinator for Hospice and Palliative Care of Chenango County.
Craig speaks unabashedly about a period of unemployment after he left NewsChannel 34, before rejoining FOX40, where he is currently evening co-anchor. If anything, that period of his life has reinforced his belief in the need to enhance and grow the upstate economy, particularly in and around Chenango County. And when he decided, after nearly 35 years in broadcasting, that it was time for a change, it was suggested that he consider applying for the chamber spot.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead an organization that helps others through a struggling economy, and I’m excited to be able to use my skills in a whole new way,” he said.
He brings with him a number of strengths, including his media background, the many connections and contacts he has from his years in broadcast journalism, and an extensive knowledge of the region, including its people and businesses.
According to Craig, the national economy is slowly improving, New York State is making progress, the “malaise” which has gripped the upstate economy for so long has finally started to lift and Chenango is poised for growth.
“I’m excited to be a part of this,” he said.
