Schools of the Past: Guilford District 3 Pine Grove or Cotton
First this week a most sincere apology to all the readers of this paper for the error in last week’s article. The article should have read Guilford not Greene! To err is only human and when writing the article, as this writer has been writing Greene articles for a rather lengthy time, the fingers on the keys could not stay away from Greene. Apology to Clifford Wade as he did not reside in Greene to my knowledge!
Returning to the districts of Guilford this week is a rather evasive one as there is literally scant information relevant to the history.
We are fortunate to have a photo of the school and we are saddened that this school building no longer exists.
In May of 1976, Clinton A. Clark documented the schools that were involved in the forming of the Mt. Upton Central School District. This district was formed in 1931 and invoiced the Union Free School, Guilford #5 (the Mills School), Guilford #7 (Godfrey’s Corners), Guilford #3 - Pine Grove and Guilford #2 (Shumway). These will be or have been the subject of articles.
The only information we have regarding Pine Grove is that it was also call Cotton School and was located on Route 8 north of Dever S. Matteson’s dairy barn. The building was destroyed for highway construction. However Mr. Clark did write that records from 1828 were in existence and this writer would like to ask where they are now and who has them? I am sure that all the unanswered mysteries of history would be revealed.
The exact location of this school and I will stand corrected if wrong. The 1875 Map of Chenango County shows District #3 as being a Joint District however no school is shown on that map. We will assume it is a Joint District with Gilbertsville, but unsure. In the assorted Joint
District Maps that have been forwarded to this writer by Leigh Eckmair, Town of Butternuts historian, there is no information about Joint District #3. Whether this District number was changed we are unaware of at this time. That is a subject for future detective work!
With this scant information, again we will close till another time. However, if anyone knows where these records are for this school, please advise The Evening Sun via their e-mail address. They will see that the information is forwarded to the correct location. That address is news@evesun.com.
