Hunts Pond set to lose picnic pavilion, administrative building

SOUTH NEW BERLIN – Hunts Pond State Forest, which was a state park until last May, will be losing its picnic pavilion by autumn and its administrative building within the next year.

The administrative building, which housed the registration office and caretaker location, has not been used since 2010. According to Supervising Forester Robert Slavicek, the NYSDEC Office of Lands and Forests plans to dismantle, surplus and auction off the structure to prevent damage. “We want to dismantle it before it gets vandalized,” he said.

The removal of the building could take well over a year, Slavicek explained. “It has to get approval through the Office of General Services.”
