Senior Lifelines devices may come with a cost in future
NORWICH – The Chenango County Area Agency on Aging has operated a Lifeline program for the past 30 years, providing personal emergency response systems to individuals throughout Chenango County. In cooperation with the Sheriff’s Office, the 911 center, county government and community support, the service has always been provided on a contribution basis.
The Agency has received notice from Philips Lifeline that the equipment platform, used to locally receive and monitor calls coming into our response center from Lifeline users, will be discontinued. This equipment, currently housed at the County 911 Center, is answered and monitored by local personnel. The Agency has been notified by Philips that key components for manufacture and maintenance of the equipment have been discontinued by their suppliers. Design innovations and changes in technology are leaving us with a system that will soon be obsolete.
Within the next year Philips Lifeline will no longer provide the option of operating a local response system as they will no longer support maintenance to our existing equipment. Lifeline calls made from units located in users homes will be handled through a central monitoring platform operated by Philips Lifeline in Massachusetts. As a result, a monthly monitoring fee for each home unit in operation will be required.
The Area Agency on Aging is currently looking at the impact this will have on the program as well as those individuals who use this service in the community and caregivers who rely on Lifelines for security for their loved ones.
