Otselic Valley Board of Education holds re-organizational meeting
GEORGETOWN – The Otselic Valley Central School District Board of Education met for its annual re-organizational meeting Wednesday in the elementary school cafeteria in Georgetown.
Newly-elected board member Marcia Marshall, OV Superintendent Richard Hughes, principal Daniel Henner and board president Gregory Brown – elected by a vote of three to two – each gave their oath of office to OV District Clerk Gail Evans Burpee.
Marshall will serve a five-year term as a member of the school board, a position she has previously held.
Henner – who was hired as grade five through twelve principal on July 1 – said he’s looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
“I’ve been looking at school and regents data, and the differences between the state and school assessments,” said Henner. “I have a lot of work ahead of me, but I’m excited. I’m excited to come to work every day and I can’t wait for the school year to start.”
According to Hughes, Henner comes with six years of assistant principal experience from both the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown and Liverpool school districts. As a former math teacher, Hughes said Henner understands how data needs to drive instruction.
“I am confident that Dan will help the students of Otselic Valley meet the academic challenges necessary to be college and career ready.”
The board voted unanimously to elect Douglas Evans as the board’s new vice president, following which Burpee and George Lott were sworn in as District Clerk and District Treasurer, respectively.
A number of appointments, designations and authorizations were then unanimously approved by the five members of the board.
Hughes said the biggest challenge for the 2011-2012 school year will once again be the school’s budget. The property tax cap and cuts in state aid, he added, will have an impact on the programs the district can offer its students.
Hughes also announced a special meeting of the board to discuss a plan for an proposed building project in the fall of 2011. The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on July 25 in the Otselic Valley Junior-Senior High School Gymnasium, 125 County Road 13A, South Otselic.
