Seiler, Smith repeat as Bluestone champs

OXFORD – Winning isn’t everything, but winning is the only thing the team of Todd Seiler and Bryan Smith has done since they paired for the first time last year.
The duo repeated as Bluestone Golf Course Men’s Member-Guest champions here Sunday afternoon. Combined with last year’s Canasawacta Country Club men’s member-guest title, the Seiler-Smith combo is now a perfect 3-for-3 in member-guest outings.
“I just wanted to say, I really like playing with Todd,” Smith said after Sunday’s final round.
You would have to believe Seiler feels the same way, who has won the Bluestone men’s title multiple times over the past 15 years. “(Winning) this means a lot to me,” Seiler said.
Seiler and Smith grabbed command of the tournament on Saturday shooting a 6-under-par 64 in a best ball format. Teeing off the first hole in the final championship pairing on Sunday, Seiler and Smith sizzled out of the gate shooting a 6-under-par 28 on the front nine to expand the advantage. Seiler, who eagled the ninth hole on Saturday, did the same on Sunday to create a large bulge over runner-up Scott Seiler Sr. and partner John Byroads.
“There are a lot of good teams out there who can go super low, so we knew we had to shoot probably 8- to 10-under-par today,” Smith said.
A bogey on the 11th hole – the second in as many days – was the only hiccup in an otherwise spotless day for the champs. A birdie on 12 righted the ship, and a rare eagle on the par-four 16th hole sealed the deal. Todd Seiler drove the 330-yard hole, and after narrowly missing his eagle putt, Smith used the read to perfection draining the deuce.
Turns out, the Seiler-Smith eagle on 16 was not unique as Seiler Sr.-Byroads had rolled in an eagle a few minutes earlier. “You’re sad that the tournament’s over, but the nice thing about this one is that we have (Canasawacta’s) member-guest to look forward to, and it’s right around the corner,” Smith said.
Seiler and Smith finished with a 9-under-par 61, a round matched by Seiler Sr, and Byroads, who wound up three shots back at 12-under. Placing third at 10-under par was the team of Gene Wood and Doug Caldwell.

In other flights: Dave Cappadonia and Justin Bennett shot a tournament-low 10-under-par 60 to capture the first flight by three shots over Cory Seiler and Steve Upton. Starting on the fifth hole, Cappadonia and Bennett did not bogey a hole and had five birdies and one eagle over their first nine holes, the highlight an eagle on the par-five ninth hole....Tom Farrell and Ken Benjamin Jr. birdied their first two holes – eight and nine – fell back with bogeys on the 18th and first holes, then finished strong with red numbers on the third, sixth, and seventh holes to top runner-up, Chad Bradley and Ryan Bishop, by two shots in the second flight....Wayne and Mike Burrell shot a second-round 4-under-par 66 in the third flight to best John Witchella and Gerry Bennett by two shots. The Burrells fell back to even par after a double bogey on one and a bogey on two. They offset those miscues with birdies on three and seven, and a flight-clinching eagle on the ninth hole....Mark and Dave Hinlicky, late entries into the tournament, won the fourth flight by two shots. The Hinlickys had three birdies to highlight their final-round 75 to outpace the teams of Tony Abbott-Frank Brown and Dick Diamond-Bill Kelsey by two.
