500 NYSEG customers without power following early morning accident

NORWICH – Driver fatigue may be to blame for a one-car accident which took out a utility pole near Walmart shortly after 6 a.m. Monday.
According to Trooper Neil Case of the New York State Police, 19-year-old Tyler Webb of Oxford was on his way to work when he fell asleep going through the intersection of Route 12 and Upper Ravine Road in the Town of Norwich.
Webb’s green Chevrolet van left the roadway, striking first a Frontier telephone pedestal and then a NYSEG utility pole before coming to a stop facing south in the north-bound lane.
According to Case, Webb had no external injuries but was taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital in Binghamton by ambulance as a precaution.
No tickets were issued.
Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo expressed surprise that the utility pole, which was broken in two places, remained standing after the accident.
“It’s completely sheered off,” he said.
Norwich Fire Police were on the scene, diverting traffic away from the northbound lane even after the vehicle was removed from the scene by Ken’s Car Care of Guilford, as NYSEG crews worked to repair the damage.
In order to replace the pole, power was shut off to 500 NYSEG customers in the vicinity, according to Chief Dispatcher A. Wesley Jones, including Walmart. At approximately 9 a.m., it was announced that the superstore would be closed until power was restored which, according to Chawgo, would be another three to four hours.
