Relay for Life raises more than $152,000
NORWICH – This weekend saw another successful Relay for Life at the Chenango County Fairgrounds. Organizer Marie DeSarro said by the end of the American Cancer Society fundraiser, participants had collected $152,000 for the cause with still more donations likely before Aug. 31.
There were approximately 675 participants at this year’s Relay, spanning 50 teams. Out of those 50 teams, 31 teams have raised more than $1000 and according to DeSarro, that number may rise as more money is donated. The theme for this year’s Relay, Chenango’s 15, was “The Greatest Cause on Earth.” Many teams took part by dressing in circus costumes.
“This was by far one of the most successful events that I’ve ever been a part of,” said DeSarro. “It was exciting to see how determined each team was in their efforts to raise money for the event.”
There were also 230 survivors at the event. Two of these survivors were Norm and Betty Jenne, who volunteered staff, food and time for the past three years from Smyrna Market in order to put on a successful Survivors Dinner. This year’s Relay was dedicated to the two individuals, thanking them for their continued support, dedication and strength and was “the most emotional part of the event” for DeSarro.
“They wanted to share ... the value of life and the tenacity of the human spirit to work through and beyond pain is to not only ‘survive’ ... but to endure and celebrate life and even flourish through the face of adversity,” according to the dedication written for the Jennes.
Donations will be accepted until Aug. 31 by mail to the American Cancer Society. DeSarro said that it must be specified as intended for the Relay for Life for Chenango County and if there is a team or individual you would like it applied to.
