Man arrested for breaking into two Norwich restaurants
NORWICH – The burglar who broke into Bill’s Diner early Saturday morning made off with an empty register and four felony charges for his efforts.
Jeremy A. Squires, 36, of New Berlin, was taken into custody by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Sunday following an investigation into the incident, which took place at approximately 2:53 a.m. Saturday.
According to Lt. Richard Cobb, Squires kicked in the eating establishment’s glass door and stole the cash register. His actions were captured on video surveillance equipment, which helped identify him as the culprit.
Police were also able to link Squires to another burglary which took place in May of 2009. On that occasion, Cobb said the New Berlin man also forced his way into a restaurant after hours and stole the cash register, that time at Mary’s On The Corner. He is believed to have made off with approximately $130 in cash.
In the Bill’s Diner burglary, the cash register was empty.
In both instances, “the register was taken and damaged beyond use,” Cobb said.
According to Cobb, the Norwich City Police assisted the Sheriff’s Department in the investigation.
Squires has been charged with two counts of third degree burglary, class D felonies, and two counts of third degree criminal mischief, class E felonies.
Squires was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility following his arraignment and is currently being held on $1,000 cash bail. He will reappear in Norwich Town Court at a later date.
