Early morning fire hits Golden Artist Colors
COLUMBUS – Golden Artist Colors opened for business as usual today, despite an early morning fire which filled the corridors of the paint manufacturing facility with smoke.
“They are extremely lucky,” said Chenango County Fire Coordinator Matthew Beckwith.
According to Beckwith, the fire originated in a room in the center of the building where the company’s products are labeled.
At approximately 3:25 a.m., the Chenango County 911 Center received a fire alarm activation from the facility, located at 188 Bell Road in the Town of Columbus. At the same time, a Golden Artist employee working in the building also called 9-1-1, and reported smoke in the building.
According to Beckwith, the man was the only person in the facility.
Crews from the New Berlin, South New Berlin, Sherburne and Edmeston Fire Departments, as well as the Chenango County Bureau of Fire, responded. Beckwith said that upon their arrival, the employee was able to direct them to the location of the fire.
Responders were able to extinguish the blaze in under 30 minutes, he said, after which they turned their attention to clearing the smoke from the 100,000 square-foot facility.
While Beckwith said he was waiting on an “official determination” from the New Berlin Fire Department’s cause and origin team, he believed the fire was caused by a hairdryer. The dryer, one of three in a cardboard box in the room, had “heated the box to the point where it caught fire,” the fire coordinator explained.
Jodi O’Dell, a spokesperson for Golden Artist Colors, confirmed that the fire had occurred in a product labeling area on the facility’s lower level near the main production floor. According to O’Dell, company officials are in the process of assessing the damage, the majority of which she said appeared to be from soot.
“My understanding is everyone responded very quickly,” she said. “Fortunately it was kept localized and we’re just happy no one was hurt.”
Founded in 1980 by Sam and Adele Golden, Golden Artist Colors is an employee-owned company which manufactures products for artists under the GOLDEN Acrylics and Williamsburg Handmade Oils labels. They currently employ 147 at their facility in the Town of Columbus.
