Sherburne plans Heritage Day Saturday
SHERBURNE – Sherburne’s Annual Heritage Day will be Saturday, July 30, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There’s a different ‘spin’ on it this year. The theme of the day is “Postcards, Pictures and Pottery.” There will be about eight postcard/picture display boards set up in the log cabin and each will have a central theme.
Each of these boards will show postcards and pictures, with labels describing what you are looking at, where it was located, who is shown in the view and pertaining dates. These displays start with the western edge of the village and show West State Street; East State Street; North Main Street; South Main Street; Church and Park Streets and the Churches of Sherburne; Rexford Falls, the Spring House and Drover’s Tavern; Sherburne Quarter and the Cotton Mill and Lewis’s Restaurant. Several local postcard collectors will display their albums and a greeting card postcard collection is also planned.
The upper level of the log cabin will allow local Hart’s Pottery owners to set up their collections for the day.
The program lineup is as follows:
10 a.m.: The Boy Scouts will do the flag raising in front of the district schoolhouse. The schoolhouse will be open also.
This will be followed by the dedication of a tree planted for the Relay For Life group at the backside of the log cabin and a plaque will be applied to the back corner of the cabin.
Then will be several musical groups, including Jenni Larcher, Red Raville, Tom Murphy and Carl Pickett, the Blue Parsley Boys and Faith Wilder.
Celebrate the Centennial of the Sherburne Public Library with a skit about the Pratt family’s contribution, with Living History portrayers.
Gilligan’s will furnish the food and the Sherburne Historic Park Society will have their usual bake sale.
There will be vendors and demonstrations of spinning wool, corn broom making, blacksmithing, among others, for your enjoyment throughout the day.
Pepople have been selling raffle tickets for a beautiful hand quilted, queen-size quilt, with a patriotic-theme. Tickets will be available that day for a donation of $5 and drawing will be later in the day.
Also there will be a community rummage sale at the north end of the park. All are welcome to set up a personal yard sale free of charge. Just bring your own table and canopy.
Town Historian and favorite local author, Rose Wellman, will have her newest book for sale, which is titled “In The Land Of The Bullthistle, The Early History, Book Two, Postcards and Pictures.” Expected cost--$20.
Participants will close out the day’s events with the flag lowering and folding and Taps.
All events are located at 11 School Street in the log cabin. Watch for signs near the Sherburne-Earlville campus.
