SNB Fire Department hosts county-wide fundraiser Saturday

SOUTH NEW BERLIN – The Chenango County Fire Chief’s Association is inviting the public to come out this weekend and show support for the county’s volunteer firefighters and emergency responders at the second annual Firefighter’s Fund Day.
The event will take place Saturday at the South New Berlin Fire Station, 3327 State Hwy 8.
“Even though it’s in South New Berlin, it benefits every department member in the county,” said Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo, who serves as president of the CCFCA.
According to Chawgo, proceeds from the event will benefit the organization’s Firefighter’s Fund. The fund was created last year and is designed to help firefighters and their families during their time of need. Through the fund, the chief’s association will both provide seed money to departments to enable them to host fundraisers, as well as give direct grants to individual members who find themselves in the midst of crisis.
Chawgo describes the fund as “firefighters helping firefighters.”
“We do a really good job of taking care of people in our community,” he explained. “We want to make sure we’re helping each other as well.”
The day-long event will include a number of activities sponsored by different departments, all of whom have come together for the cause.
“This is a fun-filled day of activities, which will include breakfast at the South New Berlin station, the car show, golf tournament, poker run (which is open to motorcycles, vintage cars, rat rods, etc.), food and beverages, live music, an auction, games for kids, and a dunking booth,” said Kavin Winton, president of the Red Knights Motorcycle club, which is sponsoring the poker run. “To make this a successful event, we truly need the support of the community.”
Saturday’s schedule of events will kick off with a pancake breakfast from 6 to 10 a.m. at the South New Berlin Fire Station, sponsored by the Sherburne Fire Department. The New Berlin Fire Department has organized a nine-hole captain and crew golf tournament at Riverbend Golf Course. Flights will leave at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., with registration opening an hour before tee-off. The cost to participate is $120 per team of four, which includes greens fees, cart rental and lunch. To register contact Ken Wiggins at 847-8880, George Hanslmaier at 847-6480 or email k.wiggins@frontier.com.
Back in South New Berlin, the Brisben Fire Department will host a Cruise In from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. At 10 a.m., registration will open for the Poker Run. The ride will start and end at the South New Berlin station, with stops in Laurens, Fly Creek and West Winfield. According to Winton, cars, trucks and motorcycles are all welcome to participate in the scenic 100 mile ride, which will depart at 11 a.m. The cost to participate is $15 per drive, $10 for riders and $5 for each extra hand.
The poker run’s top prize is four Cooper all-season tires, valued at $400, courtesy of Williams Tire in Pittsfield.
“I am extremely pleased that he has extended such support to the Chenango County Firefighter’s Fund,” Winton said of Williams Tire’s owner, Jeff Williams. Second and third prize are a helmet from Excell Motorsports in Hubbardsville and a $40 gift certificate from Sherburne Motorsports respectively.
The afternoon will include a number of activities for kids and families at the South New Berlin Fire Station, including live entertainment, games, a dunking booth, bounce house and fire prevention displays. General admission is $5.
The Mount Upton Fire Department will sell food and beverages throughout the day, including barbecue chicken cooked by their South New Berlin counterparts. Sundown will perform from 1 to 5 p.m., and TK and the Mad Dogs will take the stage from 8 p.m. to midnight. In between the two musical performances will be a live auction, which starts at 5 p.m. Tim Wakefield of the Oxford Fire Department will serve as auctioneer.
According to South New Berlin Fire Chief Kevin Christian, there are a number of donated items ready to go on the auction block, including custom lamps crafted from air tanks and old fire extinguishers. Two of those lamps are painted fire engine red and decorated with the FDNY and 343 Remembrance emblems in commemoration of September 11. Also to be auctioned off are handmade afghans, Dale Earnhardt memorabilia, a fishing pole donated by Mayhoods and items donated from a number of other area businesses. In addition, approximately 50 gift certificates will be up for grabs in a separate Chinese auction.
“The businesses throughout this and neighboring counties have been very supportive,” said Winton, of all the donations received.
Christian also applauded both these businesses and the members of the community and fire service who have stepped forward in support.
“We have 150 to 200 people that we have to thank,” he said. “Without the donors and sponsors, we wouldn’t have what we have.”
Christian said he hopes the community will come out and support the event on Saturday, but he recognizes that Mother Nature may have something to say about the ultimate success of the fundraiser.
“The only thing we can do is hope for a good day so we can raise money for a good cause,” the South New Berlin chief said.
